Serenz Hayfever Treatment Review #Serenz

I've suffered with hayfever (Allergic rhinitis) since childhood, some years are better that others but I've become used to warm, sunny days meaning a streaming nose and red, puffy eyes. I've grown accustomed to carrying round a minimum of two packets of tissues in my handbag and regularly having to reapply my make up.

There are plenty of products out there that claim to help with the symptoms of hayfever and I'm sure I've tried most of them over the years! Some do help to ease the symptoms but often have other side effects such as drowsiness, or take a good while to kick in and have to be taken well in advance of symptoms appearing, which isn't great when I start work at 8am and need to be able to concentrate without constantly blowing my nose and tears streaming down my face.

I was recently offered the chance to try out a new hayfever relief treatment that is different to others on the market.

This is what Serenz has to say about their product:

Serenz is a natural allergy relief product, clinically proven to start working in minutes. As the first allergy product to use carbon dioxide for drip-free relief from nasal allergy symptoms, Serenz works quickly without causing drowsiness.

How does it work?

Serenz is a hand held device that uses pressurised carbon dioxide (CO2) to cleanse the nasal passages. this can relief the nasal symptoms of allergies without causing drowsiness or the need for steroids. It doesn't require a prescription and comes with clear instructions that are simple to follow. It is only recommended for use by adults age 18 plus.

The inhaler comes with a small blue paddle which you insert into the bottom of the unit before use and turn 180 degrees. You then insert the top of the Serenz into your nostril forming a vacuum, press and hold the blue button for ten seconds and then repeat with the other nostril. It's important that you don't breathe through your nose while using it so you can either hold your breath or breathe through your mouth.

I've been trying out Serenz for just under a week now and I'm impressed with the rapidness of the relief it brings. I do find that that I get an uncomfortable sensation and watering eyes while using it but it's bearable and I can certainly see a improvement in my nasal symptoms immediately after use.

There are a number of benefits to Serenz, it's easy to carry round with you, can be used as and when without needing to plan ahead and provides rapid relief. I did experience a reduction in my nasal symptoms for a period of time and although they came back later in the day I was able to use it again as it is natural and does not contain medication.

Serenz is available from Weldricks Pharmacy priced at £19.90, which will provide 40 x ten second treatments. This isn't a budget option but I find that most effective allergy relief treatments are expensive, and I would rather spend money on a product that works that end up spending more buying several cheaper options that are ineffective.

You can find out more about Serenz at http://serenz.co.uk/

I was sent this product and asked to provide an honest review.  All thoughts and images are my own.

Confessions of a Summer Parent...

So the summer holidays are almost upon us and the frantic google searches of how to entertain our children for six weeks have started...

We want something fun, but educational...

Exciting, but inexpensive...

Active, but not too tiring...

Then we have to fit it all in with the playdates, the summer camps, our work, cooking, cleaning and oh yes actually sleeping at some point over the next month and a half!

If it's any consolation, we know that it'll all be over in a flash and September will be here before we know it. Although, actually I know that thought won't help when we're in the middle of what feels like a thirty hour day, we have a todo list as long as our arm and two children whining, 'Muuuuum, we're bored.....', because every single toy in the house has been played with, screen time has been used  up (and some!) and they are fed up of playing outside in the rain...

So here are my top tips (confessions!) of a Summer Parent...

Daddy Jumping in a muddy puddle

1. If you can't beat them, join them!

They're in their best clothes with no wellies, but they've been eyeing up that giant muddy puddle for the last ten minutes. You may not have any spare clothes with you, and you know that you're going to get the car covered in mud on the way home, but really who can resist a Muddy Puddle? I know my husband can't!

2. Get the kids to do the cooking!

'I'm huuuuuuungry......' Two words every parent will hear about three thousand times each day of the summer holidays. Well why not get them to sort out lunch for a change? Get a ready made Pizza base, pop sweetcorn, peppers, tomatoes and Anchor cheese in to some bowls and let them go crazy! I guarantee you'll get half an hour of peace while they make funny (or rude!) faces, treasure maps or pretty patterns with their lunch! All you'll need to do it pop it in the oven for ten minutes!

3. Get the kids to earn their keep!

The list of chores will no doubt be getting longer over the summer holidays so why cross a few off while keeping the children busy? Washing the car is a good way of them helping out and is great fun in warm weather too (just don't let yourself get involved in a water fight, well unless you want to!)

4. If all else fails... Chocolate!!

I'm not one for bribing children as a rule but if helps to keep your sanity then why not reserve treat for negotiation once in a while? Chocolate is so versatile, they'll likely take it in the packet but again if you want to keep them distracted for longer melting it for them to 'bake' something with is usually a good idea. (And don't forget Mum's emergency chocolate hidden in the ironing of course!

What are your tips (or confessions!)  for keeping the kids occupied during the summer holidays?

The Adventures of Bernie the Beaver...

Seven weeks ago my then seven year old, Ben, arrived home from Beavers with a huge grin plastered across his face. It was finally his turn. He got to bring Bernie the Beaver home....

                                                                                                                         ...for the whole summer!!

He's been going to Beavers for almost two years now and has been waiting to be chosen to look after the group mascot for most of that time. He was delighted that Bernie would be staying at our house for not just a single week but seven whole weeks!

He could wait to start our summer adventures and luckily we had lots of fun planned for the summer holidays.

As well as taking photos of Bernie while he joined our family for the summer, Ben had to write up a journal entry detailing where he had visited.

Ben asked if we could also share this on 'Mummy's Pennies' (as he calls the blog) and I thought it was a great idea. So I'm going to pass you over to Ben, please enjoy this very special guest post from my eight year old. He would love to read your comments at the end.

This summer Bernie the beaver came to stay with my family. He is a very special beaver who likes to go on adventures. He came to stay with me, my Mum, my Dad and my little sister. We did lots of fun things together. We went to two festivals, Festwich in our local park and Just So Festival in Cheshire. Bernie liked listening to the music and having lots of fun.

We went to three castles. Skipton castle in Yorkshire, Wray castle in the Lake District and Windsor castle in London

We went on two camping trips and Bernie liked sleeping in a tent!

We went on a boat on Windermere and a boat trip on the Thames in London.

Bernie likes LEGO like me so we visited Legoland discovery centre in Manchester and saw lots of LEGO and we went to Legoland in Windsor where i'd never been before. It was lots of fun and Bernie liked the red LEGO Ninja. We went to Sealife and saw the Jellyfish that changed colour in the water.

We also went to somewhere called Malham in Yorkshire and slept in bunkbeds with green pillows and walked through the woods and found a very big waterfall. I'm glad Bernie didn't fall in.

I had lots of fun with Bernie and I hope he enjoyed coming on adventures with my family this summer.

Ben, 8.

Halloumi and Pepper Stack - Quick Summer Meals

In the hot weather we've been having recently it can be hard to make too much of an effort  when preparing food so I like to have a few really simple and quick meal ideas to hand . This delicious  vegetarian grill stack was first created based on what was left in my fridge the day before my weekly shop! The ingredients compliment each other really well though and  and it soon became a regular favourite.

What you need (to serve 4):

A 250g block of Halloumi Cheese

Two large Peppers (I chose Yellow and Red)

100g Cous Cous (either a ready spiced mix that you can buy in the supermarket or plain cous cous and your own spices to taste.)

Dressing (I used a sweet chilli, soy and ginger dressing, but I think sweet chilli, or a balsamic glaze would go equally as well)

What to do:

Start by slicing your Halloumi into 8 pieces and place under grill, (To make it super quick and easy I used our George Foreman).

Next chop each of  your peppers up into 6 large pieces and also place on the grill.

Make up your cous cous as per the packet instructions (usually adding boiling water, stir, leave for five minutes and stir some more, adding a little olive oil if preferred.)

Turn the cheese and peppers after 5 minutes and continue to grill for a further 5 mins.

Serve by dishing the cous cous onto the plates then stacking 3 pieces of pepper and two pieces of Halloumi alternately on top to form a 'tower'.

Add dressing and season to taste and enjoy!

A deliciously simple vegetarian meal from fridge to plate in just 15 minutes, perfect for a warm summer evening!

Also great on a budget: this worked out at just 95p a serving for me!

What are your Holiday Habits?

As the summer holidays get closer many families are starting to think about packing their bags and traveling somewhere sunny for a break away. Of course we are all different and the ideal holiday for one family may be a nightmare for another. The MMP brood love nothing better than a break in a caravan or holiday park at the British Seaside and loved our Butlins break this year! I dread the idea of taking my children on a long plane journey to somewhere where I'd constantly be searching for shade! However I know that it's the opposite for many other families. It's surprising then to discover that many of us have very similar 'holiday habits'.

A few weeks ago I was contacted by Moneysupermarket and asked if I would like to help them out by completing a survey about my holiday habits. As well as planning how to spend the £30 they gave me as a thank you I was quite excited to find out the results, mainly because I'm nosy, but also because I wonder if what we do on holiday is 'the norm'. As both myself and Mr MMP work full time and the children are in childcare for most of the week, we really value any time we get off together and tend to pack it full of activities!

There were some results that I expected and some that really did surprise me...

Are there really only 8% of us who still send a good old paper postcard?

To me it's not a proper holiday if I don't get to pick out a cheesy looking card, scrawl 'wish you were here' on the back and wait for it to arrive with friends around two weeks after we get back!

Why do postcards always take twice s long as 'normal' post? Is it a secret? Does anyone know?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who only ever wears around half of what I pack, if I'm honest it may be less than that, I plan out my full outfit for each day, then end up in the same 2 comfy dresses all week!

What are you hioiday habits?

#365 #week14 Easter catch up!

On Monday I  posted my 365 photos from the week end and apologised, for not posting them daily, well I'm afraid I have another apology for you! I've been so busy enjoying the Easter holidays with the children that although I have been taking photos every day I just haven't had time to post each day, so here is a collage of my photos of the day for each day from Good Friday to now, we have had a fun filled week and i'll tell you more about each one below...

#88 - We had a lovely day at the Manchester Duck race in aid of Brainwave, this is my little Easter Bunny holding Daddy and Nanna's hand on the way to the race.

#89 - We had a fun day out at the brand new Dog Bowl  in Manchester City centre, Ben is getting really good at bowling and both the children beat me!

#90 - We had a lovely Easter Sunday visiting family in the morning and then exploring Heaton Park in the afternoon  and had a lovely ride on the old fashioned trams...

#91 - Monday was a restful day to recover from a busy weekend and get prepared for work on Tuesday and I was delighted to be able to dry Elizabeth's nappies on the line for the first time this year! There is just something beautiful about a line full of nappies!

#92 - I was very excited to come home from work to find the postman had delivered our copy of Maggy Woodly's Red Ted Art, we've had it on pre-order since December. We can't wait to get crafting

#93 - Today I just had to take a photograph of the beautiful sky when I stepped of my office, wish I hadn't been stuck inside all day!

#94 - Ben had an exciting day visiting #MOSI with Nanna and I was very pleased that they came to meet me for lunch at Bagel Nash just  round the corner from my office. My handsome boy gave me a gorgeous grn wen I walked in!

#95 - Ben had another fun day with Nanna and they did some baking, When I came home from work, this lovely chocolate krispie cake was thrust upon me with the words, 'I made you a heart shaped one Mummy, because I love you!' I think my heart melted!

#96 - Today we visited the Trafford Centre and had great fun taking part in the #LEGOyodabuild, Both the children really enjoyed helping to build a giant Yoda from LEGO and posing for photos with Lightsabers, but Ben's absolute part of the day was meeting Darth Vader! We also enjoyed the nice weather and went for yummy Cadwaller ice creams on the way home.

So that was my (slightly extended) week, I promise I will start posting the each day again tomorrow...

Family holidays on a budget...

As a penny pinching Mummy, deciding where to take your family on holiday can be a difficult decision. Both myself and my husband work full time to cover the costs of living, this means that a holiday, when we can spend precious time together as a family is very important to us!

We want to spend our time away doing things all four of us will enjoy, we're definitely not a 'sit by the pool and relax' family! As long as we can do this, where we actually go doesn't really matter!

So far all our holidays as a family have been in the UK ( Hubby and I did manage to sneak off for a few days in Bruges for our honeymoon 3 years ago though!) The cost of holidaying overseas seems to just mount up. The children's passports alone would cost over £100 and that's not including photo's or postage! And even if we could get a budget self catering apartment the cost of flying has risen dramatically over the last few years. Elizabeth is under two so would be free but for the rest of us we'd be looking at almost £1000 for school holiday dates even on a budget airline! Then there's the cost of food and luggage allowance etc...

For the first few years after Ben arrived we went to centerparcs for a week in September, however when he started school last year, we became restricted to holidaying outside of term time and for 'school holiday' dates even centerparcs had soared out of our budget!

At the beginning of the year, the question on my lips was 'can we actually afford a holiday this year?'

The possibility that the answer could be no really upset me. I really needed something to look forward to, that special family time that made working all the hours god sends and barely seeing my children during the week just so we can afford rent and bills, worthwhile.

Now I know there are plenty of families out there living on and below the poverty line who couldn't dream of affording to take their children away for a few days each year and I don't mean to offend anyone at all. But this time together is precious to us both as a family and for my marriage as I seem to see less and less of hubby with all my commitments at the moment.

One option I considered was a 'staycation' where we all had a week off together but stayed at home and just went on different days out in the local area...

This is a great idea as even though there are plenty of local attractions that we regularly visit there are so many great museums and galleries, not to mention parks and petting farm's in and around Manchester that we just haven't been to yet!

Another possibility was staying with family or friends in another part of the country for a few days to have a change of scene, again this would be low cost but it can also be a bit cheeky to ask, especially as there are four of us now. Although happy to have us for a night or two most of our family and friends just don't have the room for us to stay for any longer!

After doing some research back in February I came across the 'Sun' holiday deals, where you collect tokens from the newspaper then apply to stay in holiday parks throughout the country, including Butlins, Haven, Pontins and Park Resorts, for as little as £9.50 per person!

This is for the 'basic' accommodation, but you can upgrade from just four pound each and even when you add on extras, you are still getting a break away for a lot cheaper than the price to book direct! we decided to break our holidays up this year so we booked a weekend the on the 'Sun' deal to go to Hafen Y Mor in North Wales and a four night break to the Craig Tara Haven In Scotland in August! This way we have had two 'holidays' to look forward to, and even including petrol it has cost us less than £400 in total!!

I'll also be keeping an eye out to see if the Sun bring back their Disneyland Paris offer this year as I would love to be able to take my children there next year as their first trip abroad! Obviously we'd have to finally invest in passports for them, so we would have to factor that in to the cost of any trip...

Now our holiday's are all over for this year, and next year we will be visiting Butlin's in Skegness as a #Butlinsambassador and blogging all about it. I'm really looking forward to it, as are the children (all 3 of them!)

Kids Go Free at National Trust locations this August

I'm a huge fan of the national trust and we have been members since Ben was small. We're lucky enough to have some great national trust places to visit in the North West from Dunham Massey (my favourite!) to Quarry Bank Mill, Lyme Park, Tatton Park and Formby point to name just a few...

I wrote about the national trust's 50 things to do before you're 11 and 3/4 campaign a while ago and this weekend my little boy will be ticking a few more off this list as his has gone to Scout Camp with Daddy!

This fab new 50 Things to do before you’re 11¾ campaign provides a checklist for under-12s (and those who are young at heart!) including everything from running around in the rain and bug hunting, to setting up a snail race, damming a stream, flying a kite and growing your own veg!

If you fancy joining in with the adventures this weekend, as we certainly have the weather for it, why not pop over to the national Trust Website and print off a voucher for children up to the age of 16 to go free with a paying adult / member?

If you think there's something missing from the list you can suggest your own ideas for a chance to Win an adventure pack just got to the website to add your suggestion...

Do come back here and share your adventures, I'll love to hear what your little ones get up to!

However sometimes you just need some simple Free Fun at home!
Here are Five Free and simple play ideas....

1/ Play Trains! Save your old train / tram / tube tickets and let your little ones play 'ticket inspector!' Use some chairs to make your 'train' and their imagination do the rest! Great for different aged siblings to play together. With older children you could get them to charge you the 'train fare' and count out the change practice their maths!

2/ Go Camping in the comfort of your own home! You could use a small tent in the garden, or fashion a camping 'Den' from chairs and bedding, Regular activities like colouring, reading or jigsaws are all so much more exciting in a Tent!!
3/ Have a picnic! Everyone loves a picnic! Dependant on the weather you could have it n the garden , the park or even in the living room if it starts to rain! You don't need to make much effort or go to any expense, just serve up whatever you were going to have for lunch on plastic plates on the picnic blanket!
4/ Go bowling! Why spend a fortune to take the children to a loud, busy bowling Alley though? Make your own instead! Raid the recycling bin for some large plastic bottles and half fill with sand or water, grab a ball and you have your own bowling alley right at home!
5/ Get Active and have fun! Get your your children to create their own dance / aerobics routine, from star jumps to touching their toes and anything in between! If you have more than one this is great for getting them to work together and they could put on a show for you when they have finished! A great way of using up some of that extra energy!
