Eating healthier when out and about with the kids

As part of my recent lifestyle change and weight loss journey, I asked blogger, Neil Walsh for some tips for eating healthier when out and about with the children. The following post is a guest post written by him, do check out his blog for more tips for mums looking to lead healthier lives.

Child eating burger

Summer is almost here which means that it’s time to try and make the most of the weather
and venture out of the house. Whether it is a family outing to the seaside, a National Trust
property or the thrills and spills of Alton Towers then there will be food choices to be made.
Often on days out it is much harder to eat healthily than it is to do so in the comfort of our
own homes.

So how do make healthy choices (without having to eat wilted salad all day)?

First things first. Let’s be honest here… willpower is pretty unreliable. When faced with
unhealthy choices more often than not we are going to be tempted… and, actually, that’s
fine. A lifestyle and diet without unhealthy choices would be pretty boring and the general
rule of thumb is that as long as your choices are 80% healthy then you can be less healthy
with the remaining 20%. But be warned, it is better to be conservative with this approach as it is very easy to accidentally drift into a 50/50 balance or worse. Making a plan and being
aware is the key to success here.

The easiest way to plan is to take your own food. Pack healthy choices and control most of
what you eat. A healthy pack lunch for the family, a supply of snacks and buying an ice
cream from a van should not blow your calorific budget for the day. On the other hand,
buying a snack from the glass cabinet when ordering a mid-morning coffee followed up by a
calorific fast food lunch could have you over your calorie budget for the day before you’ve
even had dinner.

But it is also possible to eat healthily without bringing your own food. Again it just comes
down to a bit of planning. If you do happen to be going to Alton Towers (like Jen!) then food
choices are going to be limited. One of the options there is The Explorers Pizza and Pasta
Buffet. ALL YOU CAN EAT! If you have a weakness for pizza (which I definitely do!) and you
can't stop once you have started then this might be a place to avoid.

Having this in mind before you go is crucial as on the day when you are hungry and in need of a rest than being faced with sitting down and offered endless pizza is only going to have one result!

Try these guidelines for making healthy choices when eating out:

  • Plan a healthy snack before lunch so you are not starving when you do eat.
  • Try to look at menus online before you go to help you plan a more informed decision. Try to avoid panic buying that ½ pound bacon and onion ring burger!
  • Don’t be scared to try something different / healthier. Notice I said “healthier”, not healthy. If you always order the same thing when you go out then there may be healthier options that do not involve a drastic change to what you like to eat. E.g, a Big Mac, medium fries and medium coke comes in at around 1,015 calories. Swap that for a McChicken sandwich, small fries and diet coke and even have a salad shaker too and you are still only at 644 calories, a saving of 371 calories. Small savings in calories can all add up to a significant positive impact on your health.
  • Know where the calories come from. Calories in a Big Mac = 508. How many in large fries? 444! So you could almost eat two Big Macs for the same calorific cost as a Big Mac and fries… and you will be much fuller after two Big Macs! Don’t accidentally order calories.
  • If you are unable to scope out a menu beforehand then a helpful rule is that simple is usually healthier. Meat and veg will almost always be healthier than processed and cheese sauce.
  • Don’t be afraid to be ask for what you want. When ordering, ask for dressings on the side, ask to swap fries for veg, ask for half portions, most places are very accommodating.
  • Drink water. Drink water all day! Drinking water will help to fill you up, keep you hydrated/feeling good and has much lower calories than sweet options. If you take your own bottle or ask for tap water then you can save money and reduce plastic waste too!

So there we have it. Don’t rely on willpower. Plan ahead. Drink water. Perhaps just as importantly, if it all goes horribly wrong and you end up having a 4,000 calorie day then don’t beat yourself up or give up on trying to eat healthily. Don’t turn one bad day into a bad week. We all have bad days. The best-laid plans will often not turn out the way we hoped… it’s part of being human.

It is getting back on the horse again that makes the difference… not eating another horse the next day!

Family Travel on a Budget: YHA Malham Review

Family Travel on a Budget: YHA Malham Review

Last weekend we packed up our waterproofs and our walking boots and drove up country and across to North Yorkshire for a weekend of walking and exploring the Village of Malham and the surrounding area while staying over night in a family room at YHA Malham.

Although Malham is only an hour or so drive from where we live in North Manchester, it's a part of Yorkshire we have never visited before as a family. My husband passed though here two years ago when he completed the Three Peaks Challenge and was pleased to have the opportunity to return and explore.

Before our trip, I'd researched the area and we were looking forward to walking to Malham Cove, the great Limestone cliff that reaches over 250 feet high. The impressive rock formation was featured in the  blockbuster movie; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and has been mentioned multiple times in literature and prose. We also planned some walks across towards Gordale Scar visiting Janet's Foss Waterfall in the Woodland. Another must while we were in the area was a visit to the nearby Skipton Castle on our way home. You can read about our walks and castle adventures in a separate post soon.

Exploring Malhamdale in north yorkshire with kids

I'd not stayed in a youth hostel in this country since a school trip to Ambleside when I was 11, so I really wasn't sure what to expect. We were booked in a 4 bed family room with an en suite toilet. As a family that regularly camps, we were used to basic facilities so I was mainly hoping for somewhere clean and dry to rest our heads after a long day of discovering all Malhamdale had to offer.

What we got was so much more!

We arrived late morning and parked up in the car park that overlooked the two wooden camping pods that YHA Malham also offers as accommodation. We spent the afternoon exploring the village and walking up to Malham Cove. On return around 4pm we walked up to the reception building to check in with the friendly staff.  After being handed our room key we were offered free wifi cards for our phones and tablet and told about dining options. A communal dining room and kitchen facilities were available for all guests to prepare their own food and if we were staying for more than one night we certainly would have taken advantage of these.

Food and drink available at YHA Malham

Food and Drink

On this occasion feeling a little weary from the extensive walking we have all done we decided to take advantage of the dining options and booked ourselves in for both dinner later that evening and breakfast the next morning to set ourselves up for another day of adventures. I was impressed by the value of the food. A full cooked breakfast with continental options was just £5.25 for adults and £2.95 for children including a choice of drinks. Dinner was even better value, with four options for each course, two of the mains being vegetarian, two courses cost just £9.95 per person and a child ate free for every adult dining! Jugs of drinking water were provided at no extra cost and if like us you wanted to treat yourself to a stronger beverage, a choice of ales and wines were available to buy.

Accommodation

The room we stayed in contained two sets of bunk beds, four lockers and a chair, and the en suite had a toilet and sink. Showers were available to use just two doors down the hallway. All facilities were very clean, there was not a lot of space but certainly enough to store clothes and other bits for a couple of nights. All four beds were made with bedding in the distinctive YHA green, each bed had it's own power socket and nightlight and there was an additional double socket near the doorway. This was ideal for charging the varied tech devises we had brought along, from phones to cameras and the ipad.

The reception area offered a comfortable space to enjoy a drink and peruse leaflets of the local attractions and walks or read a book and the gardens outside had seating to enjoy the views in brighter weather.

A family Stay at YHA Malham in Yorkshire

Things to remember when staying at YHA Malham

Bring your own towels - they do have then available to hire for £2 but why waste money?

Bring toiletries, despite being very welcoming and comfortable YHA is not a hotel so you wont get those posh little toiletries. We remembered most of ours but forgot soap so had to use shower gel to wash our hands!

Bring evening entertainment, there is a communal lounge room that has a TV and some games for the children, but once they are in bed you are confined to your room so bring a pack of cards, a board game, book or take advantage of the free wifi and bring your tablet to watch your favourite show on Netflix.

If you are self catering, bring food! The village of Malham is beautiful but it only has a few basic shops that are centered around walking equipment and souvenirs, You are looking at a 15 minute or so drive to the nearest small supermarket.

Overall Thoughts

We have really enjoyed our first family stay in a youth hostel and would definitely do it again! With family rooms from just £29 per night it's a great way to explore the UK on a budget. We love camping and enjoy sleeping outdoors but sometimes it's nice to have more than canvas over your head, especially as it gets towards the colder months. It's also much easier not to have to pack up all our camping equipment in the car if we're only going away for one or two nights. The addition of free wifi allowing me to upload photographs from our adventures really made a difference to the camping trips we usually have where I can feel a little cut off from social media.

As for the area, we are smitten! We really enjoyed the walks we did with the children, but have talked about returning as a couple to do some more challenging trails. We've even discussed staying in one of YHA Malham's camping pods for our wedding anniversary next year.

If you are looking for a comfortable, friendly place for your family to sleep while exploring the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales then YHA Malham fits the bill perfectly and if you have yet to explore the beauty of Malhamdale then I would wholeheartedly recommend a visit.

I will now leave you with a quote from Bill Bryson that we saw over the weekend;

"I won't know for sure if Malhamdale is the finest place there is until I have died and seen heaven (assuming they let me at least have a glance), but until that day comes, it will certainly do."

We were invited to stay as guests of YHA, we paid for all our food and all images and opinions in this post are our own.

Easter Egg Hunting and Fun in the Sun at Dunham Massey

Daffodils at Dunham Massey

Yesterday we planned to visit one of our favourite National Trust locations to take part in their annual Easter Egg Hunt with Cadbury's. We were a little disappointed  to wake to cloudy skies and fog however we packed up our picnic and set off with hope that the sun would still come out to play.

Thankfully our wishes came true and not long after we arrived the fog cleared and the skies turned a brilliant shade of blue.

budding trees and blue skies

The magnificent hall at Dunham Massey has been transformed into the Stamford Military Hospital as it was almost 100 years ago, during the First World War. We decided to take the tour around the house learning about some of the characters that worked and were treated there during the war years. I found it really interesting but I have to admit there wasn't a lot to hold the children's attention.

Dunham Massey is Stamford Military Hospital

They were much happier when we stepped outside into the beautiful gardens to begin the Easter Egg Hunt. They have been looking forward to this all weekend and loved every second!

Easter Egg Hunt at Dunham Massey

Despite a huge amount of visitors, the staff were extremely organised and we had soon parked up the scooters and collected the Maps and guides ready to follow the Easter Egg hunt! The clues all centered around Buzz the dog who had befriended the soldiers when Dunham Massey was a hospital during the war. The children excitedly skipped from one clue to the next while my husband and I trailed behind, enjoying the natural beauty of the gardens.

After figuring out all six clues Ben and Elizabeth eagerly exchanged their sheets for a Cadburys chocolate EggHead each while Daddy headed to the car to collect our picnic.

The beautiful sunshine warranted a sweet treat so we queued up for a delicious ice cream, that was definitely worth the forty minute wait!

Ice Cream in the sunshine

Despite being a very busy bank holiday, Dunham Massey didn't feel too crowded and we enjoyed relaxing on the grass watching the children play with their scooters until it as time to go home.

We had a wonderful Easter Monday and thanks to being National Trust members it only cost us the price of our ice creams!

I've written before about the benefits of our Family National Trust membership for an annual fee of just over £100 not only do we contribute to a very worthwhile charity we also have unlimited entry to a  multitude of amazing places to visit. We're already looking forward to our next National Trust adventure at St Michael's Mount on our Cornish holidays.

Did you have an Easter Egg hunt for your children?

Kids Go Free at National Trust locations this August

I'm a huge fan of the national trust and we have been members since Ben was small. We're lucky enough to have some great national trust places to visit in the North West from Dunham Massey (my favourite!) to Quarry Bank Mill, Lyme Park, Tatton Park and Formby point to name just a few...

I wrote about the national trust's 50 things to do before you're 11 and 3/4 campaign a while ago and this weekend my little boy will be ticking a few more off this list as his has gone to Scout Camp with Daddy!

This fab new 50 Things to do before you’re 11¾ campaign provides a checklist for under-12s (and those who are young at heart!) including everything from running around in the rain and bug hunting, to setting up a snail race, damming a stream, flying a kite and growing your own veg!

If you fancy joining in with the adventures this weekend, as we certainly have the weather for it, why not pop over to the national Trust Website and print off a voucher for children up to the age of 16 to go free with a paying adult / member?

If you think there's something missing from the list you can suggest your own ideas for a chance to Win an adventure pack just got to the website to add your suggestion...

Do come back here and share your adventures, I'll love to hear what your little ones get up to!

Visit National Trust places for free and find out about 50 things to do before you're 11 and 3/4...

The ‘50 Things to do before you’re 11¾’ campaign is in response to a report commissioned by the National Trust which highlighted research that fewer than one in ten children regularly play in wild places compared to almost half a generation ago, and a third have never climbed a tree!

I find this awful too read, both our children love running around playing outside whatever the weather! My husband runs a scout group so we're never short of ideas for outdoor fun! Ben at just four has already visited Daddy on scout camps and helped to collect wood, build shelters and make campfires!

This fab new 50 Things to do before you’re 11¾ campaign provides a checklist for under-12s (and those who are young at heart!) including everything from running around in the rain and bug hunting, to setting up a snail race, damming a stream, flying a kite and growing your own veg!

To help bring to life these simple pleasures, the Trust has formed a group of Elite Rangers who will share their expert tips on enjoying outdoor adventures and their enthusiasm for encouraging children to play alfresco.

The five rangers, all Trust staff, come from across the UK and range in age from 29 to 49. They include a 6ft 3” tree climbing expert, who has scaled 50 metre-high trees, (a.k.a. Tree Man), Captain Skim who can skim a stone over 26 times and Midas the treasure hunter. The other rangers are Den-Boy, an outdoor hideaway-building champion, and a mini beast expert (aka The Bug Catcher).

The fantastic five will be offering top tips on their chosen skill to the nation’s children over a Free Weekend (21st and 22nd April) when the National Trust will open up over 200 of its houses and gardens for free over the weekend, as well as all the countryside spaces it cares for, which are always free access.

You can can pick up a free 50 Things To Do Before You’re 11¾ scrapbook from participating properties! To find out more and sign up go to nationaltrust.org.uk/50things where children can fill in their completed activities and earn points towards their very own explorer badge!
