School's Out: Summer Holiday Plans

Today my seven year old broke up from school for the holidays. The end of term marks the beginning of a rather significant six weeks for us as my daughter starts reception in September! I will also be starting a new job with longer hours in the Autumn so we are determined to make this one a summer to remember!

I'm detailing some of our plans here to share with you how we intend to get the most out of our pennies these school holidays. We'll be mixing Free days out with budget breaks away and a few treats we've saved up for thrown in there too! I'll be writing up our thoughts on lots of the days out and activities we experience so I'll add in links to our blog posts as we go along! Why not bookmark this page and pop back to see how we got on?

Week One

Ironkids UK

Iron Kids UK - On Saturday both children will be taking part in Iron Kids UK, they have their t-shirts and numbers to wear and are rather excited! I must remember to tell Daddy that he has to run with our 4 year old!

Making Dens in Heaton Park with Park Lives - I'm always searching online for free things to do in our local area and I was thrilled to come across the Park Lives website. They run free outdoor activities or children in Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle, London and Nottingham. After a quick search of their activities page we found a Den Building session for 8 - 13 year old's in Heaton Park so Ben is booked on for this Wednesday!

Watching Home at the Cinema - After lots of outdoor fun earlier in the week, we have a special treat planned for the children. While I'm in work, Nanna will be taking them to the Kids AM showing of HOME at our local cinema. During the school holidays Vue offer a variety of recent movies on a 10am showing for just £1.99 for both adults and child tickets.

Week Two

Dora Sing-Along Twitter Frenzy - On Monday 27th July from 11am to 12 noon, we'll be taking part in the #DoraSingAlong twitter frenzy and sharing our thoughts on some of the new Dora and Friends toy range that we've been reviewing. Why not pop over to twitter to join us? You could win some fabulous prizes.

Week Three

walking in Malham

Exploring Malham with YHA - On the first of a few budget breaks away this August we will be visiting the North Yorkshire village of Malham, staying in a family room at the YHA. We are planning on doing some walking in the local area and maybe even visiting Skipton Castle while we're there. It will be great to explore somewhere that none of us have visited before.

Tesco Let's Cook Cookery Course - This week my 7 year old is booked on a free three day (2 hours per day) practical cookery course at a nearby Tesco store, as part of the Eat Happy Project. He is a keen chef and loves helping in the kitchen so I hope this will give him even more confidence and grow his skills!

Active Kidz WaterSports Sessions at Crosby Lakeside - Ben will be visiting Nanna in my home town of Crosby for a couple of days this week and she's booked him on a water sports session at her local marina. These sessions are just £5 for two hours and he could be bell boating, raft building or problem solving out on rafted canoes! He went canoeing here last year and loved it!

Run Wild, Child - On the 6th August, as part of Manchester's Dig The City festival, Wild Rumpus invite families to take part in a free immersive wild adventure across Manchester City Centre. We will be collecting a magical map from the Information Point at Exchange Street from 10am and then discovering the secrets of the wilds of Manchester, finding our way through their tricks, mysteries and clues to discover the clandestine location and join them at their annual moment of revelry of gigantic proportions at 3pm! We have been warned to go prepared to expect anything, get muddy and, in particular, get wet! I can't wait!

lego birthday cake

Just So Festival! - We are unbelievably excited about attending out first full weekend camping festival as a family! You can read more about the wonderful things we'll be experiencing in our first blog post about the festival here.

LEGOLAND Windsor - You will know that we are huge LEGO fans and as Legoland Discovery Centre Ambassadors this year we regularly visit our local attraction and really enjoy the experience but for a while now our children have been wanting to visit the large LEGOLAND themepark in Windsor so as a special treat to celebrate our son's eighth birthday and our daughter starting school we have saved up our pennies and collected vouchers so we can take a trip down to London and spend a day there. We'll be staying in a local hotel for a couple of nights so hope to visit Windsor castle too.

Ben's Birthday - My first born will turn eight on bank holiday Monday so we will be celebrating with a BBQ with friends and family and this will mark the end of a jam packed summer to remember!
