Top Up Summer Wardrobes: Cheap Threads for Kids

The summer months are just around the corner, and the winter threads that may be taking up valuable wardrobe space just won’t do when the sun comes out in full force.

 While some parents may not have to worry about what cash they spend on their kid’s clothes, others are fretting about having to clothe their children for the new summer season on a tight budget.

Muddy Puddles #bargainoftheweek!

If you read the blog often you will know that we are a family that love the outdoors! My husband is a Scout leader, we regularly go on family camping trips and enjoy days out in the countryside! We are National Trust Members and Forestry Commission Ambassadors.

All these adventures mean that the whole family needs to be kitted out in suitable outdoor clothing and that can get expensive! Last week a friend told me about the sale at www.muddypuddles.com  and I am so pleased she did! With up to 70% off children's outdoor wear I couldn't resist filling up my basket and I was thrilled to find when getting to check out that 2 x Fleeces, 2 x fleece lined waterproof pants, a funky skort, a fleece hat AND four pairs of socks came to just £40.50!! Delivery was £3.95, as you will know I usually HATE to pay delivery charges, however as this was my first order I signed up to their newsletter and was sent a code for £5 off which more that covered the delivery charge! So for less than £40 I had kitted both my children out for outdoor adventures! 

One thing to mention is that I'd read on social media about the sizing being a bit small so I bought a size up from what I would usually in both the fleeces and the trousers!

I for one am really pleased to see a large mainstream retailer such as Sainsbury's take this step, I have been using Bambino Mio products for many years and have seen the range grow and develop  from the 'pre-fold' system that was the first nappy my daughter ever wore to the reliable 'childcare friendly' MioSolo's that were loved by my daughter's nursery. I really hope that this will help to introduce the idea of cloth nappies to even more families and make it easier for them to get hold of accessories such as liners and nappy cleanser, asI always resented having to order online and pay delivery charges for small items.

My top 3 tips for taking photos of children...

In addition to offering you this fabulous prize, Zulily have challenged bloggers like myself to share our best tips for taking photos of little ones....

So here's my top three tips for capturing your children's best smiles...

1. Take your camera everywhere! Whether it's a compact pocket camera, a phone, or dare I say even a good old single use disposable (yes they do still make them!) having a way of taking photos where ever you are means that you'll never miss that sparkle in your little ones eye. The above photo was taken while my daughter was in her scruffs playing in the back yard and I was putting out the washing, she just started giggling on the top of her slide, I grabbed my phone, took a shot and I love the result!

2. Hide the camera! If either of my children see a camera pointed at them, they will pose, pull faces, pull tongues, dance or  hide, basically do anything other than smile! So I end up taking most of my photo's with my iphone, hiding it until the last minute and then catching them when they are in 'uncontrollable giggle mode!' I love this photo of my daughter on her Daddy's shoulders at the park, she was just so happy and had no idea that i'd got the camera out!

3. Don't be afraid to be silly! The above are great if you want a spontaneous shot, but there are times that you can't afford to wait, it could be a family party, on holiday, posing with something they have created or even showing off a new outfit. If you want your little one to smile there and then you have to earn it! Jump up and down, pull a face or sing a song, as long as you are prepared to make a fool of yourself you're sure to get some giggles! This photo of my five year old showing off the bread dough that he had been expertly kneading was taken while my face was covered in flour, he found it hilarious! 

 So there we go! My top three tips to get your little ones smiling for photos, not very technical, I admit but they work for me! So why not have a go? Feel free to share your tips in the comments too!

The Poundland Halloween challenge

I was recently delighted to find out that I had been chosen as one of the ten new poundland ambassadors! We will all be completing a number of challenges to see what we can get for our money at poundland...

My first challenge as a Poundland Ambassador was to decorate a Halloween themed table with just  £20 to spend.

I know it's not for everyone but my family love Halloween, the dressing up, baking spooky treats and having fun creating lots of cute crafts!

We love having Halloween parties so I couldn't wait to see what we could get from Poundland to decorate our house in a Halloween theme...

As I walked into the store I was presented with a selection of Halloween themed tablewear from paper plates and napkins to tablecloths and pumpkin decorated straws, As I started browsing the selection a staff member came over and advised me that they had even more selection in the second aisle  very friendly an helpful staff!

I was really surprised at the variety of items they had available for just one pound each. I was expecting tablewear, sweets and masks, but they had a whole aisle of spooky offering including whole costumes! After filling my basket to the top I joined the queue and was pleasantly surprised to find that my 3 bulging bags of shopping came to just £20!

So what did I get?

Can you believe that this all came to less than £20? I was even able to get 2 packs of my favourite weight watchers biscuits too!

 From the balloons to the plates and napkins, tablecloth and straws, all of the items made a lovely contribution to our spooky table but I wanted to tell you a little bit more about some of my favourites....

The cake decorating kit was lots of fun! For just £1 you get 24 cake cases in 2 designs (cute pumpkins and scary skull and cross bones) and co-ordinating toppers. As soon as Ben saw these he couldn't wait to get baking and created some yummy (if a little messy!) cakes!

The pumpkin lanterns wee a huge hit with both the children, When lit up the sparkly orange pumpkins glow gently and the black felt smiley face is illuminated, spooky and cute! These make great table decorations...

These pumpkin straws come in a pack of eight for £1 and can easily be washed and used again. I love the the purple and orange together!

 This giant inflatable pumpkin was a huge hit with my almost two year old! A multitude of uses from a funky centerpiece to a seat and a ball...

 This string  of mini pumpkin lights are great for hanging up to decorate the room and bring just a little bit of light into the spooky theme.

The balloons came in a pack of twelve and were printed in two Halloween themed designs. Good quality and strong these still haven't popped!

The whole table was a big hit with the whole family and we enjoyed a spooky Halloween tea party! But we couldn't do this without dressing the children up could we?! So while I was in Poundland I checked out their costumes, and could not believe what they had for just a pound!

 Choosing a scary skeleton top, black and white face-paint and a a glowing skeleton pendant for Ben and an adorable pumpkin tunic and matching hat for Elizabeth we were almost sorted, but we couldn't forget some pumpkin pails and sweeties to fill them with could we?

I was really surprised at the quality of some of these items, a lot of party items like this are disposable and only get used once so can be poor quality  but I found all of these party items to be really good value for money. I especially loved the felt pumpkin pails which are fabulous quality and I see them lasting for years to come!

I'm even going to be sending a lot of them into Elizabeth's nursery to enjoy for their Halloween party, so they'll be reused! Even better value for money!


We had great fun completing the Halloween challenge and can't wait for 31st October! Back by popular demand is the search for ‘The Face of The Baby Show’ whereby proud parents can enter their children into the competition to become the face of the advertising for the 2013 shows!

Hosted by Bumpkins, your child’s picture will be taken by expert photographers with years of experience to produce high quality prints, one of which you get to take home with you for free!

Providing parents with some well-deserved help and relaxation, the show offers several ways to make their visit more enjoyable including the free Fisher-Price Crèche, free shopping drop off & collect by car services, the Albelli Central Café, free baby changing with nappies and wipes plus a feeding area complete with free food from Plum.

The Baby Show aims to take the hassle out of shopping by giving visitors a secure and stress-free environment with wide aisles to accommodate pushchairs and plenty of seating.

The stage in association with Made for Mums is a new addition to Manchester.

This fun-filled, must-attend element of the show, will have expert speakers taking to the stage to provide first class advice, plus its fashion galore with the latest trends strutting down the catwalk!

Gracing the stage this summer comes the popular Annabel Karmel talking about nutrition and meal-ideas for the whole family; the British Red Cross with essential first aid help; renowned sleep expert Jo Tantum; the best-selling parenting author Commando Dad for all the dads out there and two of the midwifes from the BAFTA Award winning Channel 4’s One Born Every Minute to calm those fears about labour and to tell visitors what it’s really like working on a busy ward. featuring maternity wear, baby wear and products from exhibitors all around the show will give visitors inspiration and some great ideas.
