Family Fun with Funko! (Ad - Review)

Disclosure: We were sent the items mentioned in exchange for this post - This post contains affiliate links
Funko are known for being the brand that covers all of your fandom needs and with licenced pop culture products from almost every fictional world you can think of of, including Batman, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, DC Comics and Hello Kitty to name just a few, they have helped to keep the MyMummysPennies household entertained during lockdown!

The lovely folks from Funko sent us a box full of fun for the whole family to enjoy at home. I've been a fan of Funko! Pops for a number of years but have always seen them as more of a grown up collectable than toys to play with. I have certainly changed my mind after receiving this box of Funko fun suitable for the whole family to enjoy.

A selection of Funko products including Harry Potter, Harley Quinn, Hello, Kitty, Batman and Jurassic Park

The arrival of our box of Funko goodies couldn't have been timed better, being stuck at home and looking for things to entertain us. We were sent a selection of products including the Pop! Vinyls, Mystery Minis, SuperCute Plushies, FunkoVerse game and more! Read on to find out about each of the products we received.

Funko Pop! Classic and Pop! Heroes

3 Funko Pop Vinyl figures - Hello Kitty, Harley Quinn, Batman

If you've heard of Funko they you will have heard of Funko Pop! Vinyl figures, I think pretty much everyone I know has a few of these on a shelf at home representing a movie series or character they love.  As Funko themselves say, 'Everyone is a fan of something', and displaying these distinctive  'chibi' style collectables are the perfect way to take home a little version of something you love! While some of the rarer Comic Con exclusive and limited edition Pop! Vinyls may be safer kept in their boxes, the smooth, robust vinyl and bright, detailed decoration of these funky figures mean that they can be played with safely and are ideal for imaginative play for older children and tweens!

Hello Kitty Classic Funko Pop! Classic figure in blue dress with red bow

This Hello Kitty Pop! (Classic) takes me back to when I was the same age as my daughter in the nineties and this little Japanese cartoon kitten with the big red bow was all the craze with my friends, still popular now with all ages, this one has been sitting on my daughter's desk supervising her stationery and her school work since she arrived!

Harley Quinn Funko Pop! Vinyl figure with glass in hand

Harley Quinn Funko Pop! Heroes figure next to box with other birds of prey characters

Fans of DC Comics will of course recognise Harley Quinn. This is a character more for the grown ups but oozing with bad girl vibes, and more recently in the Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous emancipation of one Harley Quinn,  a strong dose of feminism she is certainly iconic and this Black Mask Club fugure forms part of the Heroes collection released to go alongside the aforementioned movie, also offering characters  such as Black Canary and Huntress as well as other versions of Quinn.

Batman 1989 Funko Pop! Heroes Vinyl figure with reflection

Batman. We can't really talk about iconic pop culture without mentioning the caped crusader now can we? My other half is a huge fan of the Dark Knight, especially the cheesier early incarnations. In fact, one of our last days out earlier in the year was to a race track day where he got to drive the original Batmobile! This 1989 version of Batman takes him back to his eighties childhood and was a welcomed father's day gift. This Pop! Heroes  was released to celebrate Batman turning 80  and comes complete with a batarang!

Funko Vinyl SODA!

Batman Funko soda can limited edition collectable figure with can and token

A new and limited edition to the Funko family for 2020, only 10,000 pieces of this figure was released. Presented in a plastic soda can with a pop off lid this figure is very different to the Pop! style Funko figures but is still distinctive and collectable especially dressed in the retro blue and grey outfit. As an extra treat inside the soda can there is a round POG shaped collectable token too!

Funko and Harry Potter

If I had to name one fictional universe that is loved above all others by members of our household it would definitely have to be the The World of Harry Potter. The nine year old is a fully fledged Gryffindor and loves the original trio of Harry, Hermione and Ron while still enjoying the early books in the series, the almost teen sees himself as a Hufflepuff through and through and is a huge fan of Newt Scamander and the Fantastic Beasts movies series, and both the adults in the house are Potterheads too. We all thoroughly enjoyed exploring the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios in Florida last year and are hoping that our planned trip to Warner Bros. Studio Tour in London goes ahead later this year! So as you can imagine when we found some Harry Potter licenced goodies in our box of Funko fun they were very popular.

Harry Potter Bellatrix Lestrange Funko mystery minis vinyl figure with box

The nine year old is all about the blind bags and the mystery box toys so naturally she claimed the Harry Potter Mystery Mini and even decided to do a YouTube unboxing video for it!
The Mystery Minis have an RRP of £5.99 and come with one of 14 exciting Harry Potter themed characters. Which one will you find?!
Despite being full of sweetness and light, she does have a soft spot for a stylish bad girl with attitude so was very pleased to find a mini vinyl figure of Bellatrix Lestrange inside! As with all the Funko figures Bellatrix is well made and the attention to detail on her outfit is exquisite. She is a smaller figure than the usual pop range at just under 4 inches tall but still stands sturdy on her feet so would be perfect for displaying in a collection or also ideal for imaginative play as Elizabeth chose to do.

Harry Potter Funko Super cute Plushies soft toy with glasses and sorting hat

This Harry Potter SuperCute Plushies soft toy with glasses and Sorting Hat was a lovey surprise as I had no idea that Funko sold a range of soft toys to complement their other licenced products! This pint sized wizard in training is just adorable! He is just under 11 inches tall and super soft and cuddly but also has a flat base so can be displayed in pride of place alongside your other Potter collectables after you've finished playing with him. Again no detail has been missed as he is wearing very smart silky robes with hood, and even a tie with the Hogwarts emblem displayed on it. (Note he's not in house colours yet as he's still being sorted!) Harry is wearing his distinctive glasses which are made from moulded plastic to give a fantastic 3D effect and his head is topped with the famous Sorting Hat which you can lift up the brim of to see his lightening shaped scar embroidered on his forehead. The Harry Potter SuperCute Plushies are available in a range of your favourite Harry Potter characters. I managed to nab this one myself and have already added some of his pals to my wishlist!

Pop! FunkoVerse Strategy game - Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park Funkoverse Strategy game expandalone in box

If your family is anything like ours, then you will have become quite familiar with a fair few boardgames during the last few months of lockdown. Playing a boardgame is an ideal activity to get the family engaged in something together and away from screens, not to mention the fact that many of them have an educational aspect as well as being fun!

We were thrilled to find the Jurassic Park expandalone edition of the Funkoverse Strategy game in our box of Fun(ko). I'd heard of this strategy game that is available in a number of different editions, but had never played it before. We've recently re-watched the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies so this was the perfect edition for us to play! The playing pieces are mini POP! Vinyl figures of Dr Malcolm and the T-Rex - they even have base plates to stop them falling over!

Tyrannosaurus figure with amber

Perfect for those of us who like to be a bit more hands on with our fandom collectables, there are a number of different editions of this tabletop strategy game available depending on which movie series you are into and one of the best things about it is that you can build up your collection and mix and match your characters! Each game can be played on it's own though so you can still get started with just one edition.  The full base games come with four characters but we were sent the Jurassic Park expandalone edition which can be played on its own or used to expand the main game pack.

boardgame with Tyrannosaurus and Dr Malcolm figures

The Jurassic Park expandalone Funkoverse game is suitable for 2 players (or teams) and comes with two game boards or maps and two Pop! Vinyl figures as well as other counters and accessories. It's advised for ages 10+ which I'd say is about right due to the strategic thinking required, we played in teams so my 9 year old had some help from a grown up. If you're not used to strategy games it does take some practise but there are some great tips and instructions on gameplay as well as a video on the Funkoverse website which are great to get you started.

Thanks so much to Funko for sharing their goodies with us and introducing our family to a different and much more interactive side of the Funko product range that I was previously unaware of. Here's to lots more Funko family fun in the future!

The Jungle Book at The Lowry, Manchester - Theatre Review

On Wednesday we were invited to attend the opening night of The Jungle Book at the Lowry Theatre in Salford, Greater Manchester. It's a favourite venue of ours, having attended many family theatre shows over the years.

This adaptation of  Rudyard Kipling's much-loved children's classic was written by  Olivier Award-winning Jessica Swale, directed by Max Webster and presented by the team behind Goodnight Mister Tom and d Michael Morpurgo’s Running Wild.

The production is packed with memorable characters fantastically costumed in ways to spark a child's imagination, introduced new songs and tells a familiar tale in a new and intriguing way.

The themes of friendship and acceptance are presented in a comical way that thoroughly entertained both my 7 and 10-year-old children.

The Jungle Book Programme

As we watch Mowgli grow up in the jungle and battle for survival, this heart-warming tale of adventure features live music performed on stage by the characters while others dance amongst the visual 'jungle' built of ladders and bamboo stakes.

The show is recommended for children aged 6 and above, which I would say is accurate guidance as there were a couple of loud moments of shouting that slightly unsettled my seven-year-old and so younger children may have found this too much.

Both children thoroughly enjoyed the show and my 10-year-old in particular barely stopped laughing all evening. It was lovely to see how captivated he was with this humorous retelling of a tale he has loved since he was tiny.

The show is running at the Lowry until Sunday 6th May 2018 and tickets are still available to book. To find out more and to book, go to The Lowry website, or call the box office on 0843 208 6000..

We were invited to attend the show as guests of The Lowry.

Disney On Ice presents Passport to Adventure at Manchester Arena - Review

On Wednesday we visited the newly re-opened Manchester Arena to see Disney on Ice Presents Passport to Adventure, it was our sixth time watching a Disney on Ice show and my Disney mad daughter declared that it was the best show ever!

We donned our Disney themed clothing to get into the spirit and jumped on the tram after school to head into the City Centre to Manchester Arena. It was our first visit to the venue after the terrible events that took place in May and it felt quite emotional to be there again. However, the staff were all fabulous, super friendly and made us all feel very safe. The security was fantastic and handled really well, taking note of the information on the arena website, we took very little with us so passed through the airport-style scanners quickly and easily.

Happy Family meeting Mickey Mouse at Disney on Ice

Both children were super excited to have the very special opportunity to have their photo taken with Mickey Mouse before the show. (OK, I admit it I was excited too!) We soon found our seats and took our places ready to enjoy the Disney magic!

Before the main show began, we were treated a Fit to Dance pre-show warm up with the stars of Zootropolis, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. It's definitely worth arriving early to give your children the chance to see this extra segment and join in the dancing!

Mickey and Minnie Mouse with friends at Disney on Ice Passport to Adventure

It wasn't long before the much-loved characters, Mickey, Minnie, Daisy, Donald and Goofy came out onto the stage ready to start the show, their costumes were amazing as always and perfectly themed with the 'Passport to Adventure' title, they even had their suitcases ready!

The world tour of Disney delights started with a beautiful display of costumes from around the globe, skating to It's a Small World, which my daughter loved as it took her back to our Trip to Disneyland Paris earlier this year and her favourite ride!

Timone and Pumba at Disney on Ice - The Lion King

I don't want to reveal too much but the first half continued to take us on a whistlestop world tour, stopping at  Africa in the Pridelands and getting us all dancing to 'I Just Can't Wait to be King', then London and Neverland on a magical adventure full of Pixie Dust with Peter Pan.

Peter Pan and Captain Hook Crocodile

After a short interval where I successfully veered the children away from the rather shockingly priced merchandise (but did treat them to a box of popcorn each for £4), we headed Under the Sea to visit with Ariel and friends, which involved some amazing skating that had the audience oohing and ahhing throughout.

The Little Mermaid at Disney on Ice Passport to Adventure

The final destination we visited was Arendelle, where we were treated to a mini-retelling of the Frozen story including all the much-loved characters and favourite songs! We've Frozen featured in Disney on Ice previously, but I think this may have been the most entertaining yet, we just wanted to sing along!

Elsa - Frozen - Disney on Ice Passport to Adventure

The spectacular finale brought all of the stories together and ended the show with a sparkly bang!

Each segment had something unique to offer and our whole party were enchanted throughout the show, however, one had us just squealing with delight and that was Peter Pan! It's long been a favourite of both my children and everything from Tinkerbell, Peter and the Darling children flying high across the Arena to the wonderful costumes of the lost boys and of course those pesky pirates led by my son's favourite, Captain Hook!

Peter Pan and Wendy flying at Disney on Ice

We thoroughly enjoyed the show and had a wonderful family evening!

Disney On Ice presents Passport to Adventure at Manchester Arena

Disney on Ice Passport to Adventure Show Manchester

Disney On Ice will be returning to the Manchester Arena this year with Disney On Ice presents Passport to Adventure. The show will run from 11th to 15th October 2017 as part of the tour that started in Glasgow and visits Newcastle, Birmingham, Belfast, Dublin, Sheffield and London before the end of the year.

Disney fans young and old can join Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse as they take audiences on a fun-filled journey to the most memorable Disney destinations with all of the favourite characters and classic tales that have captivated the world.

Disney on Ice Passport to Adventure Stamp

Manchester Arena is a place close to my heart, I attended my first music gig there as a teenager in the nineties, and have been to many more since as well as taking my children to a variety of shows and experiences at will what be always known to me as the M.E.N. Arena.

The terrible event that took place earlier this year scared me and made me think about all the times I had been stood in that foyer with my children. However, it has not put me off returning there with my children as we are Manchester and we are tougher than that.

As you will know from reading past posts, we are a house full of  Disney fanatics and this will be our sixth time watching Disney on Ice; it's looking like it may be the best one yet!

We're looking forward to exploring the African Pride Lands with Simba, Timon and Pumbaa, voyaging deep under the sea to Ariel’s mystical underwater kingdom and touring London with Peter Pan and Wendy, before flying to Neverland to meet up with Tinker Bell. That's three of our favourite Disney movies covered there!

My daughter is also super excited that Frozen will be featured again this year as she absolutely loved last years Anna and Elsa themed show

There will be lots more excitement, including the pre-show party! Families arriving early will get to take part in the Fit to Dance pre-show warm up featuring Zootropolis!

Mickey Mouse and Families at Disney on Ice Fit to Dance Workshop

We were treated to a sneak peek of this last month when we attended an exclusive Fit to Dance workshop in Manchester, led by the Disney On Ice Skaters and hosted by leader of dance troupe Diversity, winners of the third series of Britain's Got Talent, Ashley Banjo himself!

So if this has got you singing your favourite Disney tunes and ready to dance along why not book your tickets now?

LEGO Batman Movie takes over LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Manchester

LEGO Batman poster

The caped crusader has landed at one of our favourite places for a family day out, LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Manchester!
Superhero. Crime-fighter. Master Builder. LEGO Batman™ is all of those and so much more!
The North West's own LEGOLAND has been taken over by The LEGO® Batman™ Movie Days from 10th February until 12th March, including half term!
LEGO Batman movie days at LDC Manchester

You can meet Gotham City’s Caped Crusader to celebrate the release of the Warner Bros. feature film, which includes photo ops with the scene-stealing star, a fun scavenger hunt with prizes and LEGO Batman™-inspired LEGO build activities!
We visited last week and had lots of LEGO Batman Themed fun!
LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Factory tour

We started off with the factory tour, which both my children have done countless times, but they still love it and especially enjoyed the special Batman passwords and the limited edition LEGO® Batman™ Movie brick they each got at the end!
We then walked straight on to the Kingdom Quest Laser Ride to zap some skeletons and save the Princess and Baby Dragon, there were no Batman extras here but it was still lots of fun and my 9 year old was chuffed that he got the highest score!
the LEGO Joker ON BLACKPOOL TOWER IN MINILAND

the LEGO RIDDLER IN MINILAND

Next in was in to MINILAND, which had been well and truly taken over by LEGO Batman and the villains! We'd been handed a fun LEGO Batman mark and a scavenger hunt card on entry so we got to work searching for the clues and solving the riddles! The children had an awesome time spotting all the characters hidden among the familiar LEGO structures and did a great job finding them all.

Just as we came out of here, an announcement told us that LEGO Batman himself had arrived and was ready for some meet and greets so we wandered over to the Party room, and joined the short queue to meet him and get a photo. An official photographer was present to take photos you could later purchase but they were happy for us to take our own pictures too. My six year old delighted in giving LEGO Batman a big hug!

We then wandered back to the LEGO Racers: Build & Test area where as well as the usual vehicle bits and bobs there were lots of special Batmobile pieces available ad a competition to build your own Bat themed creation with 25 bricks or less! My nine year old carefully constructed his entry (which he got a special pop badge for) while my six year old just enjoyed building lots of cars and sending them down the ramps! The children would have happily spent hours in this area if we'd let them!

While we were there we also popped into the 4D Cinema to watch The LEGO® Movie™ 4D: A New Adventure, built a cute LEGO Raccoon  Master Model Builder’s workshop, drove around the LEGO CITY: Forest Pursuit driving adventure (kids only, unfortunately!) and built skyscrapers on the fun earthquake tables!

As we were getting ready to leave we headed through LEGO City Builder and entered the Batcave! (formerly Ninjago training camp)
Here there was a fabulous Batman wall mural made of individual LEGO bricks that everyone could help create, along with a Batman laser challenge and this is also where the children exchanged their scavenger hunt entries for a cool pop badge and certificate.

You do need to bear in mind that some parts of LDC are currently closed for renovation (as they are going to launching some pretty exciting new things including a LEGO® Ninjago City Adventure play feature very soon!) so there is less to do than you may have experienced on earlier visits, but  for our family the LEGO BATMAN activities more than made up for this and we spent a good few fun filled hours in the centre.

If you have a LEGO BATMAN fan in your family, then it's definitely worth a visit during this event. Do make sure you find a good offer, such as buying a cut price combo ticket online or using the Mcdonalds Happy meal half price voucher!

Don't forget you can read about some of our previous visits to LEGOLAND Discovery Centre, here and here.

Air Hogs Zero Gravity Batmobile - Review

Air Hogs Zero Gravity Batmobile in packaging

Like many other eight year olds, my son is a huge Batman fan, so when the Air Hogs Zero Gravity Batmobile arrived for us to review, he was thrilled!

He couldn't wait to get it out of the box and have a play. Inside the box we discovered the zero gravity Batmobile and the remote control that projects the bat symbol. The vehicle itself was a lot lighter than we'd expected, but I guess it has to be to drive on walls and ceilings!

air hogs zero gravity batmobile and remote

At first it was a little confusing as the instructions weren't clear, however we soon figured out that the remote required 6 AA batteries (and a small Philips screwdriver to open the compartment). Once these were installed the Batmobile required charging by plugging in to a small wire that was stored away in the handle of the remote.

how to charge the air hogs zero gravity batmobile

After a little while it was ready to go! Ben was in disbelief when I told him that that the car could climb walls so of course that was the first thing he wanted to do! The walls in the kitchen are the smoothest so we tried it in there, as the walls are painte a light colour, at first the the projected batsymbol was difficult to see, but after closing the curtains, this was resolved and to Ben's amazement, the Batmobile whizzed around the walls to follow wherever he pointed the light! (To watch it in action, see our short video below).

It also worked really well on the wooden floor of the kitchen and Ben loved to send it in a frenzy around the light, not unlike a cat chasing it's tail!

air hogs batmobile climbing up walls

Just like Batman himself, the Air Hogs Zero Gravity Batmobile can speed through the alleys of Gotham, then scale up the walls really to help those in danger! Equipped with the award-winning Wall Climber technology, the Batmobile can race up the walls and even onto the ceiling, driving completely upside down. Five directions of control and infrared sensors allow children to respond to the Bat Symbol when it lights up over the dark streets of Gotham!

air hogs zero gravity batmobile toy review

Ben loves the Air Hogs Batmobile and has spent hours playing with it, however that is interspersed with charging time and he is limited to rooms with wooden floors and smooth walls such as the kitchen. Big kids seem very impressed by it too as both his uncle joined him for a play at a recent family gathering!

air hogs logo

The AIR HOGS zero gravity Batmobile is available from Amazon and other toy shops and has an RRP of £44.99, however if you shop around, you can take advantage of offers and I've found it for as little as £30, which makes it much better value for money. Ben is 8 which is the lower end of the age range this is aimed at and i'd say that was correct, although a younger child could operate it, quite a lot of patience is needed to get the most out of the toy and younger children may get frustrated with charging time or struggle to aim it correctly.

Check out our quick video below to see the Zero Gravity Batmobile in action:

We were sent the Air Hogs Zero Gravity Batmobile  for the purpose of this review.
