Back to School Essentials

Have the summer holidays flown by for you?

I'm struggling to come to terms with the fact that it's almost September and next week my son will be starting Junior School!

Just in case you are also in last minute panic mode I've put together a list of essentials that you don't want to forget for the new term.

Stationary

This is always something I leave until the last minute as some days it feels like our house is filled with coloring pencils, felt tips and about 30 multi coloured rulers but as soon as it comes to sorting out Ben's pencil case for the new term I can't find anything! I find that Poundland is a great place to stock up on the essentials at great value!

School Shoes

School shoes are one thing that I never know when to get! The stores are always so busy in August when it's close to term time and I worry that that won't have a lot of choice in the right size, but then If I try to be organised and go early on in the holidays, my son is bound to have a growth spurt and need the next size by September! This year we visited our local Clarks' store in Bury around mid August and managed to get the best of both worlds I think. Queuing for only about five minutes, great service from the friendly staff and the perfect pair of smart school shoes for less than £40!

A Lunchbox

With the introduction of Free School Meals  for infant school children, many of you may not have to worry about this any longer, however as my son will be starting juniors we have decided to keep him on packed lunches so are still on the search for the the perfect lunch box. y almost seven year old of course wants the latest character craze but my worry is that as soon as one of his friends decide they've 'grown out' of Turtles or Angry Birds, he'll be whinging for a new one! I also find that the quality of the licenced products can be somewhat lacking. I tend to favour something like the YumBox, with different sections for fun and exciting lunches!

A School Coat

A school coat is difficult, you ant get one that will last through the winter at least but you don't want it to be too bulky to carry around or your child cold end up leaving it somewhere. Also a school coat has to be tough! I remember in my sons first year in school I had to replace his coat twice as rough play (usually football!) at lunch time has caused rips and tears! I find Matalan has a wide selection of inter coats for both boys and girls that are both great quality and great value!

Back to School Crafting with Sainsbury's

We love the summer holidays, full of days out, quality family time and crafting. but it's not long until the school term starts again and we have o get back in to the routine again...

A couple of weeks ago a exciting parcel full of craft supplies arrived on our doorstep and both Ben who will be seven next week and moving up to juniors in September and his little sister Elizabeth who is excited about Pre school couldn't wait to get started. Sainsbury's had sent us a selection of their Get Creative craft range to get crafty along the back to school theme.

I spoke to Ben about returning to school in September and asked him what he was looking forward to the most. He started off telling me how exciting it wold be going in to the juniors and how he would be one of the big boys now and would have to be very good to set and example to the younger children and hep them in they were sad. He told me all about the new play ground he would get to play football on and his new classroom, but the thing he was most excited about was lunch time! (Yes he is his father's son!)

It was not just the food he was looking forward to but the time socialising with his friends, chatting about turtles and Skylanders and sharing stories of the exciting adventures they'd got up to over the summer. He couldn't wait to tell them about going camping with the scouts where he helped to make bivvies and cook dinner on an open fire!

Soon though we were back to food and he was talking about what his favorite packed lunches were. Although many children will be changing to hot dinners this September due to the introduction of free meals for infant children, Ben will still be taking  his 'mini picnics' as he calls them.

We decided to make a crafty version of his favourite lunch!

Using a selection of the Sainsburys craft supplies that we had been sent we created a super healthy packed lunch, including...

An Apple

Carrot sticks with hummous

Orange juice

and Ben's favourite; Cheese, lettuce and tomato Sandwich!

Ben cut pieces of coloured craft foam up into shaped to represent bread, cheese, tomato and lettuce and then using coloured pipe cleaners he joined them all together.

We decided that it looked like a book so Ben used felt tips and glitter pens to write the names of each ingredient on the foam and create a mini sandwich book.

Both he and Elizabeth have since spent lots of time playing with the book they made!

So simple, yet great fun!

We also used some of the other craft supplies to create 3D Elsa picture, make our own boardgame and a star mosaic.

I was really impressed with the quality of the art supplies from the Sainsbury's get creative range and they have given us all hours of fun!

Have you been chatting to your children about going back to school? What are they looking forward to the most?

We were sent these craft items free of charge and a gift card for taking part in the challenge.

A trip to the park in pictures...

So tomorrow, after two and a half weeks off Ben is back to school.

Although I didn't have the whole of the holidays off with him I managed to get an odd few days and have really enjoyed spending some quality time as a family, keeping Elizabeth off nursery too. We have done some crafting, played games, watched movies and become (according to Ben) expert chefs, baking everything from cookies and cakes to bread.

However, apart from one drizzly trip to Delamere forest on New Year's Eve, the weather has mostly confined us indoors. So yesterday morning after tearing ourselves away from CITV's 'Old Skool' weekend we were delighted to see blue skies and immediately decided on a lovely family walk.

Considering we live just a 15 minute bus ride from Manchester City Centre we are really fortunate to be spoilt for choice when it comes to places to explore the outdoors. We have a traditional swing park at the end of our road with fields for playing football and hilly paths perfect for scooting down! Just a little further we have Prestwich Clough Forest Park, filled with trees, wildlife and picturesque streams as well as some adorable carved wooden animals hidden amongst the foliage which are very fun to spot. Venturing through the Clough we then have Phillips Park, which has so much to offer from it's adventure playground to it's orchard and community fruit garden tended by Incredible Edible Prestwich and District and vast greenery, ideal for bike rides, dog walkers or little explorers

Believe it or not, this is not all, if we walk in the other direct from our house, within ten minutes we are at Heaton Park, one of the largest Municipal parks in Europe and the reason I agreed to make our family home in Prestwich 6 years ago (it was my husband's home town).

I could write pages and pages about Heaton Park as I have had so many special memories from within the grounds, one of the most significant being my wedding day nearly four years ago. But I will leave that for another post.

Yesterday we had a lovely walk around, the children tired themselves out playing on the grass, hiding behind the trees and chasing each other down the paths. Elizabeth then decided that she would have a rest on Daddy's shoulders while Ben and I went to get ice cream (Yes - Ice Cream in January!) We watched the ducks and geese on the lake, waving to the donkeys in the field and then to the colourful land train. I had a play with my phone taking some photos. Even though they were taken just on my iphone, I got some beautiful shots and both my Silent Sunday Post for this week and yesterdays #365 photo were among them.

A New Beginning...

So my eldest little one, Ben turned 4 last week (he's still my baby!) and yesterday he started school!

To say I was emotional would be a gross understatement! He's so young and I was really worried that he was not yet ready to take this giant step. Being born on 31st August he will be the youngest in his year, (I was the opposite being a September baby, I was the eldest!) I keep saying that it's unbelievable to think that if I had been in labour for another six hours he wouldn't be starting until next year!

As well as his age, there are other things that worry me, such as his speech. He had a language delay and although his language is now fantastic, his actual speech still suffers in some areas and I know from situations at play groups and in the park, sometimes other children can struggle to understand him and he finds this frustrating. I don't know what will happen when I am not there to 'translate'.

However there are other times where I realise that he may actually be ready, I underestimate how mature he can be sometimes and I do think that becoming a big brother to Elizabeth Rose last November has played a big part in this. He is so caring and gentle towards his baby sister that sometimes it brings a tear of joy to my eye just to watch them together!

As it is quite a large school (unfortunately our 3rd choice) with an intake of 60 children, they are just doing half days for the first two weeks to introduce the children gently. So Ben was due to start his life as a 'schoolboy' at 1.30 on Tuesday afternoon. We had spent the summer talking to him about being a big boy and starting school, trying to help him understand what it was all about. He seemed quite excited but kept saying that he wanted 'Mummy and Sister' to stay with him too, so I was really anxious that when the time came for me to leave he would get upset.

Tuesday morning came and he got dressed (all by himself!) in his new uniform and shiny black shoes and I took photo after photo until he told me off and said 'enough pictures!!' The uniform consisted of grey pants (which I’d managed to get in the sales before the end of last term!) a red polo shirt and a red sweatshirt both of which I had got from M& S when they had 20% off all uniforms in July!) I had ordered one each of the sweatshirts and polo’s bearing the school's logo too (so they looked good for school photos etc!) but they needed to be collected from the school office, so it was the plain ones today which still looked really smart!

As we set out to walk the 30 minute journey to school, the heavens opened! Not a great start! But I grabbed the brolly's and off we went, Ben running ahead and looking so adorable in his uniform and new coat, and me walking behind with Elizabeth snuggled up in her new Babybjorn carrier (which we're reviewing, so watch this space for our thoughts...)

When we got there we were a little early so stood waiting with the other new children and their parents. You'd have thought it was the parents starting school not the little ones, judging by the nervous looks on the Mummies' faces! The children just looked curious!

It was as Ben's teacher came to the classroom door that I realised my Mummyfail! As she shouted 'R2 this way please' I realised that the previous day when I had been carefully writing Ben's name and class on every piece of his uniform and equipment with the laundry pen, I had written the wrong class on everything! I was mortified! How could I have got it wrong?! But I suppose If I was going to have a dozy Mummy moment it's not the worst I could have done and luckily a '1' changes to a '2' without too much trouble!

I walked Ben into the classroom and over to the cloakroom where he found the hook with his name on and hung up his coat and PE kit. We then went back into the classroom where he looked rather lost and confused! All of a sudden the children were asked to sit down and the clingy Mummies like myself were ushered back into the playground! While fighting back the tears, I managed to sneak a peek through the window and saw Ben sit down nicely with the other little ones and it struck me that even though he will have been the youngest there he must have been the tallest too, in fact he was head and shoulders above some of them! He'll be towering over me before long! I do hope that they don't expect too much of him because of this...

So after possibly the longest hour and three quarters of my life, I was back in the playground waiting for the bell! As the door opened Ben was the first out, running towards me with a big grin on his face he shouted, 'That was fun Mummy!' Immediately I saw how much he had enjoyed himself and all the worry and concern that had been eating me up inside elapsed and I wanted to cry again, but tears of joy this time! My baby boy wasn't a baby any more he was growing up!

As we walked through the park on the way home I asked him what he had done in school and he replied, 'Well Mummy, we played, then we tidied up, then we had a story, and then it was home time!'
