Dulux Bedroom in a Box - Marvel: Avengers Assemble

My children had a boring bedroom. We currently rent a three bedroom house, we moved here on a 'temporary' basis as we'd outgrown the two bed that we rented but wanted another year or so to save for a deposit...

Three years later and we're still here, our two children still share a bedroom (they prefer it that way for now so the third room is used for storage) and we decided it was time to personalise it for them a bit more than the character duvet covers and a couple of posters that they had on the walls.

If you've lived in a rented house you will know it can be difficult to decorate, you often need written permission from your landlord or letting agent and either need to keep it neutral or agree to redecorate again before you move out. As we are still saving for a deposit and do want to buy our own place in the not too distant future, we wanted to give the children something as exciting as we could on a tight budget.

If you're a regular reader you will know both my children are huge Marvel fans. We are building up quite a collection of toys, clothes and costumes bearing the familiar characters of Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man and Thor. I have to admit that my husband and I do encourage it a little as we enjoy the Avengers ourselves and are eagerly awaiting the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron next summer!

So when I was offered the opportunity to try out the Marvel: Avengers Assemble Bedroom in a Box from Dulux before its release I jumped at the chance, knowing it would make me a very popular Mummy!

The Bedroom in a Box kit provides you with what you need to create your child's fantasy bedroom!

What's in the Box?

The box contains:

  • Walltastic Avengers Assembles Designer Wallpaper Mural
  • Dulux Matt 2.5l in First Dawn
  • Dulux Quick Dry Satinwood 750ml in Polished Pebble
  • Pollycell Maximum Strength Wallpaper Adhesive

The Mural

The Wallpaper mural came in it's own box with instructions and consisted of twelve separate panels that piece together to create an amazing feature wall measuring approximately 2.5 by 3 metres.
The panels come neatly rolled up in their box so there is no chance of damage or creasing. The accompanying instructions advise how to put up the mural using using Wallpaper adhesive (which was included) or using double sided tape. The benefit of using double side tape means that the mural is then removable. This is perfect if like us you are renting, it makes the prospect of having to make sure the decor is neutral when you move out much easier. The instructions recommended Walltastic double sided mural tape but after searching in a few DIY stores and failing to find this we purchased some 'strong hold' double sided decorating tape from Wilkos. ( £2.45 per 10m roll - we used 4 rolls)

Following the guide we lay the first sheet of the mural illustration side down on a flat surface and proceeded to carefully stick the tape around the reverse of the sheet, carefully following the edges. After this we placed three strips across the sheet then placed on the wall and smoothed down with a cloth. We repeated for the rest. As our wall was slightly smaller than recommended  we left two sheets out at the edge, I didn't feel that this detracted from the image at all.

The Paint

Two tins of paint were supplied in the box, one tin of Satinwood polished pebble for the wood work and a 2.5l tin of matt paint in First Dawn

At first I thought the pale blue colour may look  little babyish but once it was on and dry I found it complemented the mural perfectly and really brightened up the room!

These were easy to apply and I was really impressed the the lack of scent. I am asthmatic and find that wet paint often exasperates my breathing but this did not effect me at all.

To complete the look of the bedroom I purchased a red rug and matching light shade in red for £25 in total and of course treated both my children to a new avengers duvet covet set!

The Bedroom in a Box kit costs £70 and I think this is great value for the fabulous makeover you get with it. Both my children are thrilled with their 'new' bedroom and friend and family (especially their uncles) are very jealous!

Marvel Superhero Costumes #bargainoftheweek

Are your children fans of Captain America, Thor, Iron Man or the Hulk?

Both my son and daughter are mad about Marvel, especially The Avengers, so I was rather excited when my friend and fellow bargain hunter Pippa posted in the Mymummyspennies Money Saving Group about a selection of Marvel dress up costumes she had seen for just £3.99 in her local Home Bargains!

She had immediately purchased Thor for her eldest superhero Bud. The next day I nipped out to our local franchise Quality Save but was disappointed to find they only had Captain America left and only in age 3 - 4. This was ideal for my 3 year old daughter who was delighted to meet 'Captain America' at Hamley's last month, however I really wanted to treat my son also. This is where Pippa came to the rescue again and managed to get not just a Captain America in size large for my eldest but a Thor for both of them too!

The sizes available were S (3-4) M (5-6) and L (7-8) - not all were available in all stores but at that price it worth a look!

So if you have a mini Marvel fan who not pop down to your nearest Home Bargains or Quality Save and see what's left?

If you've found any bargain this week why not share them in the linky, I'll give them lots of social media love! You can pop my #bargainoftheweek badge up by just grabbing the code below...
