Laughter, Tears and Inspiration: #Britmumslive 2015

This weekend I spent time with some of my best friends, I made a corsage, I cried, I laughed, I listened to Carole Smillie talk about periods and pants, and I wondered how on earth Caprice thought she could possibly be in the same boat as me...

Yes, you've guessed it, I attended Britmums Live 2015! It was my third time at the two day blogging conference and I believe it was the most relaxed experience of the three, that may have been down to experience or it may have been the lovely people I spent my time with.

I was able to attend the conference thanks to sponsorship from the voucher codes and deals site, Oony, who want to help you spend less on your everyday shopping, please do pop over and check them out!

Britmumslive is about learning, networking, celebrating and being inspired, but most of all it's about community. We celebrate members of our blogging community through the Brilliance in Blogging Awards (BiBs), we learn from other bloggers in sessions, we catch up with online friends and make brand new ones and we support other members of our community when they stand on stage and open their hearts to us.

I traveled down to London with some of my closest blogging friends; Jenny, Colette, Pippa and her three and a half week old baby, the gorgeous Little E. Despite having a tiny baby with us and Jenny having had major surgery just two weeks before, it was a chilled out journey and we arrived at The Brewery rather calm and collected, ready for another year of Britmums fun!

The event opened with an introduction from the founders, Jen and Susanna which was followed up by the first keynote from Ella Woodward aka Deliciously Ella, I was inspired by Ella's story of how her blog had grown out of being diagnosed with  Postural Tachycardia Syndrome and wanting to change her lifestyle and eating habits. In three years she has gone from a woman whose life was ruled by a chronic illness to a bestselling author and one of the UK's most popular bloggers.

We were then presented with an inspirational short from the very lovely Victoria Wright, who told us her story of overcoming bullying to become a prominent disability and disfigurement rights campaigner and how she fears stepping back into the playground when her own daughter starts school very soon.

After we'd been given a moment to wipe away the tears, Jen and Susanna let us in to the big secret they had been keeping from us on the run up to the conference, It had been revealed that we would be involved in a World Record Breaking Attempt but only now did they tell us we would be attempting the world Record for...

Most Mummies wrapped in toilet roll in 3 minutes!

Hmmm... Luckily I got away not being wrapped myself, but I got busy wrapping the leg and body of a fellow blogger... it was a rather intimate way of being introduced but it certainly succeeded in breaking the ice!

I'm sure you're all eager to find out if we did it and I can reveal that we did break the official Guinness world record and between around 600 bloggers managed to get 51 Mummies completely wrapped in loo roll in just 3 minutes! There was even a certificate to prove it. After all that paper was collected to be recycled, we had a coffee break and a chance to catch up with friends before the first sessions began.

I really enjoyed the Shouting Back: Women’s voices loud, proud and online talk with Eleanor Mills from The Sunday Times, Janet Convery from Action Aid UK and Katy Hill; Blogger, TV presenter and Mum of two. We heard stories of how women's voices in the media made a difference and helped to highlight issues that a male dominated industry rarely took notice of. Katy told us of how a simple tweet she put out about the ridiculous expectations of new mothers to start to get back in to shape after giving birth went viral and led to her being on TV chat shows around the world. Janet told us emotional stories filled with strength and bravery about women around the world who had escaped violence and FGM. Action Aid have just launched their #Fearless campaign encouraging women to stand up and speak out against violence. You can stand with them and sign the petition here.

Feeling empowered as a woman I then enjoyed a glass of wine and celebrated with my fellow bloggers at the Brilliance in Blogging (BiBs) awards presented by Carole Smillie.

Soon it was day two and we were back at the Brewery to listen to Carol again, this time she was talking about herself and how she had taken the leap from iconic TV presenter to starting her own business with friend and tennis champion Annabel Croft. She regaled us with tales about her family and why she wanted to create a product such as Diary Doll, she talked pants and periods, incontinence and embarrassments and really made us chuckle. I saw a really different and down to earth side to a woman whose face had been appearing on TV screens since I was a small child.

I attended a few sessions on Saturday, mainly those focused on social media, including; Social Media OptimisationSocial media for advanced people and How to be a social media manager. I heard some great tips especially centered around the social media channels that I use less often such as Pinterest and I even discovered a new platform i'd never heard of! The overriding message seemed to be 'curate content rather than using your social channels just for your own links', this is something I've been advocating for years so I'm really pleased it has now become the accepted way to make use of platforms like facebook pages.

I also attended Breaking Boundaries with Insight and Passion with Kate Hardcastle, whom I found to be really interesting to listen to. She is a mum herself and a big supporter of women in business , but is much more used to talking to huge halls full of businessmen from around the world, rather than a small room of bloggers. Although very direct, her advice rang true, and I will certainly be bearing her suggestion to 'sell your idea to your harshest critic before investing money and time in it' in mind. I was impressed to hear of her charity work and that all her employees get to give 20% of their working week back to a charity of their choice.

In between sessions I chatted to brands in the den including Merci Maman Gifts, Joules, Parragon, Santa Maria and Real Times and I popped into the craft lounge where I made a corsage with some adorable fox themed fabric with help from the lovely ladies from Lady Sew and Sew!

The end was drawing near, as was the most important part of the event to me, the Bloggers Keynotes. First though, we had the celeb keynote from Model turned Entrepreneur and mother; Caprice. I have to admit by that stage my focus was on my friend Jenny, sitting two seats down from me and about to read out a very emotional blog post as one of the blogger keynotes, so I may have missed the point, but I really failed to see one at all. There seemed to be a contrast to the Keynote speakers from previous years who had me crying with laughter or welled up with emotion and in awe at their bravery and resilience, Instead we had a multi millionaire model who said she was in the same boat as all of us. Somehow I doubt that.

For myself and many of the group of friends I stayed with, the weekend was centered around one thing, and that was our friend Jenny reading out a very moving post she wrote to her daughter Elspeth after she passed away last year. It had been a difficult journey getting to Britmums for her, as due to multiple cancelled operations, Jenny had major abdominal surgery just two weeks before. However she made it, she walked up on stage with Pippa and she got through it, I was so proud of her and know that Elspeth would have been too. There was not a dry eye in the room and every single person stood up at the end.

There were 12 other blogger keynotes, some amusing, some entertaining and some extremely moving, everyone that stood on that stage and read was amazing but my focus was on my friend. I was given Little E to hold while his Mummy supported Jenny on stage ready to take over if she could not continue, I was grateful for his warmth and softness as I held him close and listened to a mother's heart breaking all over again. In the brand den, there was a beautiful cart of flowers from sponsored by Lindemans, including the biggest and brightest sunflowers I'd ever seen, it seemed to be fate so a few of us shared Jenny's story with the lovely lady from The Velvet Daisy  who made up a gorgeous display of Sunflowers which we placed on our table as Jenny returned from the stage.

That was Britmums Live 2015. There were tears, there was laughter, there were sunflowers, there was friendship and there was knicker talk...

Until next year, Britmums!

Jen xx

I'm going to #BritmumsLive with Oony.co.uk!

I’m going to BritMums Live

Britmums Live is the biggest two day event for UK lifestyle and parent bloggers and I'm thrilled to announce that I will be attending for my third consecutive year thanks to the lovely folks at Oony.co.uk!

Oony are a company that is right up my street. As a penny pinching Mum, I am always looking for ways to save money and try to avoid paying full price for anything if possible.

Oony started up back in 2012 with a clear goal in mind: to make it possible for every person to spend less on every single purchase they make.

It wasn’t easy, and it took a lot of experimentation. They focused on bank discounts and coupons, and then on daily deals, only to realize the best way to help people save money is to combine all things and offer the best discounts and money saving resources to make spending less money easier. They went from mobile to desktop, to mobile again, and then they realized if they wanted to be really helpful they had to be everywhere. Because great opportunities come in many forms and in many places, and it’s just a matter of finding the best one for each purchase!
I am thrilled to be sponsored by a company that is just as focused on saving money as I am and you will be reading more about them here very soon...

As well as learning new skills, Britmumslive is all bout the blogging community, catching up with blogging chums, making new friends and listening to inspirational speakers. This year will be especially emotional as one of my closest blogging friends, Jenny from The Brick Castle will be one of the blogger keynote speakers, reading a post she wrote about the loss of her daughter Elspeth, last year. It is a post that has helped so many people over the last ten months and I know she is very proud to be reading it in front of hundreds of bloggers. I have the tissues at the ready...

I look forward to seeing lots of friends and hopefully making some new ones, do come and say hello if you spot me!

Here are a few photos of last years fun!

Exploring Cornwall with Kids and Cake! #Betterwithcake

Our family loves having outdoor adventures and we were delighted when the lovely folks at Mr Kipling sent us a selection of their most popular products; including French fancies, Viennese Whirls and Cherry Bakewells to show that we can make our Easter holiday days out even #betterwithcake! We took them away on our holidays to Cornwall and had some fantastic days out! I wanted to share just a few of them with you...

Building Sandcastles is #betterwithcake

Building Sandcastle's at Newquay beach is #betterwithcake Viennese Whirl

We took some delicious Viennese Whirls with us when we visited Newquay Beach. We had great adventures exploring the beach, climbing over rocks and rock pooling as well as paddling in the sea and building sandcastles! We were lucky enough to have a beautifully sunny day so spend most of it getting sandy! It's all fabulous fun but tiring work so we put the bucket and spade down for a few moments to enjoy a tasty treat!

Exploring Castles is #betterwithcake

St Michael's Mount is #betterwithcake French Fancy

We love visiting National Trust locations and have been members sine my youngest was a baby. We first visited St Michael's Mount last year when on holiday in Cornwall and couldn't resist returning again this year. It is such a beautiful and iconic place; a castle on a island in the sea, connecting with the mainland only when the tide sees fit. The children love the legends of the giant and searching for his tiny heart on the path up to the castle and they really enjoy finding the clues to complete the castle quiz, then getting a medal as their prize! I love the views, the history, the gardens, well everything really! Last year the tide was out so we were able to cross on foot but this time we had the added excitement of getting a boat across! It's a really great day out that I would recommend to anyone visiting Cornwall! While we waited for the boat back to the mainland we sat on the harbour and tucked in to a French Fancy or two! The perfect end to a fabulous day!

Land's End is #betterwithcake

Land's End is #betterwithcake Cherry Bakewell

This was our second family holiday to Cornwall but the first time we had visited Land's End. It was a wonderfully hot day but there was mist on the coast so our views were a little obstructed however that didn't mean they were any less breathtaking! As well as looking out to the sea from the westernmost point of Cornwall there was lots to entertain the whole family, including a fabulous play area with a zipwire that my 7 year old would happily have played on all day, shops to buy lovely souvenirs, a 4D cinema experience showing a Lost World Dinosaur short that my 4 year old daughter loved and a Shaun the Sheep experience that had our whole family drawing story boards and having fun! There is also a lovely small animal farm where we could pet the lambs and watch the calves being fed! While the children used up their energy on the play area we sat in the sun and enjoyed our picnic finished off with the treat of Cherry Bakewells and French Fancies! Yum!

What have you been up to these Easter holidays? Have you had any days out that have been made even #Betterwithcake? I'd love to hear about them!

A Sweet treat with #AngelDelightMoments

Angel Delight is a pudding that’s been around for many years, since 1967 in fact! It's known for being an instant pudding that's fun to make as well as eat. Many of us will have grown up with these blue paper sachets in our kitchen cupboards.

Does the familiar packaging of Angel Delight bring back any childhood memories for you?

For me it takes me back to days spent with my Nanna when I was about 7 or 8 during the school holidays. As my mum was a single parent, summer childcare meant me spending the days with my grandparents. I loved helping her with the household chores; folding sheets, dusting and digging up potatoes in the garden but most of all I loved the time we spent together in the kitchen. Now my Nanna was no culinary expert but I have very fond memories of kneeling on a dining room chair pulled up against the kitchen counter wearing a frilly pinny she had made for me out of old clothes and helping her in the kitchen. There may well have been more to our repertoire but the 'recipes' that come to mind are cherry scones, coconut macaroons and Angel Delight!

It's been over twenty years since these days and almost ten since I lost my dear grandmother, but I look back and I can see us clear in my mind, working as a team mixing the ingredients together while she told me tales of her schooldays. I a so lucky to have shared these moments with her and I treasure the memories.

Now I'm a mother and my children spend time baking in the kitchen with their own Nanna, I hope they have such memories of it in the future too.

The new Bubblegum flavour of this pudding launched in Tesco last September, and can be used to make either a the traditional instant dessert of our childhood, or ice cream can be added to make a bubblegum flavoured milkshake. Although I like to keep an eye on my children's sugar intake, everyone likes a treat now and again and I like that the Bubblegum flavour Angel Delight is made only using natural colourings and is also suitable for vegetarians.

We were sent a couple of packets from Britmums to try out and decided to make a sundae style desert with hidden treats at the bottom, what do you think of our creation?

The children both really enjoyed making it and it reminded me of those precious days sharing the kitchen counter with my beloved Nanna many years ago.

A bit about me before #BritmumsLive

Last week I shared that I will be going to Britmums Live and introduced my sponsor, Crushed UK.

I also wanted to join in with the linky on the Britmum's website but I've just realised I've left it too late and it's closed!

Here's a bit more about me anyway...

Blog:  My Mummy's Pennies

Twitter ID:  @mymumyspennies
Height: 5ft 4ish
Hair: Long, dark and unruly
Eyes: Blueish grey
Is this your first blogging conference?
No, it will be my second time at Britmums Live, I've also attended Blogcamp and Blog On for the last two years and Blogfest last year.
Are you attending both days?
Hopefully, If I don't decide to run away on Friday night!
What are you most looking forward to at BritMums Live 2014?
I'm looking forward to spending time with good friends, making new ones and hopefully being inspired too!

What are you wearing?
Most likely one of my recent charity shop finds... still deciding!.
What do you hope to gain from BritMums Live 2014?
I'm hoping to get some photography tips as I recently bought a Bridge camera (having made do with my iphone for two years) and I have no idea how to use it!.I'm also looking for some inspiration. I feel that this year may bring a change of direction for my blog and I hope to find some clues to that new path this weekend...
Do you have any tips to pass on to others who may not have been before?
Last year I found myself overwhelmed by the whole thing, it was the biggest blogging event i'd been to up to that point and I've never been good with huge crowds. i found myself following friends to sessions rather than going to ones that I felt I would get the most out of. That left me a little deflated by the end of it and I felt that I could have gotten a lot more from it!
My tip would be to familiarise your self with the agenda and make sure you head to sessions that are of interest to you and your blog. There is plenty of 'free' time to gossip and catch up with friends outside of the sessions! This year i'll be taking my own advice!
I'm currently overrun with nerves mixed in with excitement! I look forward to seeing you at the Brewery!
