Getting excited about Just So Festival 2015!

I love festivals and I'm delighted that we will be attending the Just So Festival this Summer! In the day's before I answered to the name Mummy, I was a regular festival goer and really do miss  them, we have attended lots of day events and for a few years now my husband and I have been talking about taking the children to a family friendly festival and the Just So Festival is the ideal first camping festival for the whole family!

Just So festival preview 2015

The annual weekend-long camping festival for children and their families provides an imaginative outdoor adventure like no other, showcasing the art, music, literature, comedy and theatre for children of all ages all taking place in the amazing landscape of woodland clearings and parkland that is Rode Hall Estate in Cheshire from the 21st to the 23rd of August. Both Day tickets and weekend camping tickets are available to suit the inquisitive newcomer or the seasoned adventurer.

Step aboard for adventure beyond your wildest dreams

We are seasoned campers so a little bit of mud doesn't bother us, although I'd love the sun to be shining on the Cheshire for us this weekend for us to enjoy a journey of mischief and mayhem, to lands full of magical midnight feasts, raucous pillow fights, tribal tournaments, curious creatures and breathtaking beauty.

I am a child of the eighties and even though I was a bit young to appreciate it at the time I love 80's music!
I don't think you can get much more iconicly eighties than Madness! From the no. 1 hit single House of Fun to the Ska anthem Baggy Trousers what's not to love?! Even though they formed back in 1979 they are still going strong and are currently taking their Oui Oui Si Si Ja Ja Da Da around the UK.

Jump Up and Join In with Carrie and David Grant!

jump up and join in with David and Carrie Grant

Both my children love music so when we were sent two of the new Carrie and David Grant Jump Up and Join In Books we couldn't wait to get them out and start the music!

We were sent two of the four title in the series, Lion's Speedy Sauce and Elephant's Birthday Bells, at first glance I really liked the look of these, the pages were filled with eye catching, colourful illustrations perfect to appeal to young children.

Each book comes with an accompanying CD for you and your children to read along then sing the song!

My daughter grabbed  Elephant's Birthday Bells and wouldn't let go so I guess that was a the first one to read!

Elephant's Birthday Bells

The illustrations were colorful and really appealed to both my 2 and 5 year olds who were pointing to the different animals and other things they spotted throughout the book. The accompanying cd's really added an extra element, as well as an audio read through of the story they had lots of fun extras including songs, music lessons and more!

The story was a learning journey that got both children engrossed in the musical theme which was all about loud and soft sounds. We followed Elephant on her quest to find an instrument that was softer than her  loud stomping and Trumpets.

The children really enjoyed practicing the different loud and soft sounds (especially the loud ones!!)

Lion's Speedy Sauce

The Lions's Speedy Sauce was all about rhythm and time in music and my 5 year old especially loved the clapping and rhythm exercises on the CD.

Both books include a craft idea too which is a lovely idea to get further enjoyment from them and extend the play. We will be trying these out soon!

At just £6.99 each I would fully recommend these book to encourage any child's interest in music!

A Fun Family Movie Night with Happy Feet Two...

On Saturday we had a lovely Family day together and decided to finish it off with a fun family Movie Night! So Ben and Daddy made some popcorn while Elizabeth and I got Happy Feet Two ready to watch!

The lovely folks at Warner Brothers sent us the Triple Play Edition to review that includes a Blu Ray Disc, a DVD and an ultraviolet Digital copy!

I was rather excited about seeing the sequel to the Academy Award®-winning animated smash hit Happy Feet, which I loved!

Happy Feet Two was released on Blu Ray and DVD in the UK on 26th March 2012 and is also available in amazing 3D! They are all available from Amazon and prices start at just £9! Click here to see the trailer...

So we all snuggled together on the couch with popcorn at the ready! Funnily enough Ben had tight hold of the bowl and it didn't seem to reach Mummy or Daddy!

As we started to watch, we were immediately immersed in the beautiful animation of the South Pole, in just a few minutes I could already imagine how effective this would have been in 3D at the cinema!

We are returned to Emperor Land amidst a fabulous vocal medley with fun singing Penguin takes on Justin Timberlake's 'SexyBack' and Basement Jaxx', 'Do Your Thing' to mention just a few. We meet again Mumble, the master of Tap, who is all grown up and now a Daddy to the adorable little fluffball that is Erik! (Erik's Mummy is of course Gloria who we remember well from the first movie, However the the powerful voice we hear from her now comes courtesy of Pink, who has taken over the role from the late Brittany Murphy.)

Even though he is incredibly cute and so obviously loved, poor Erik doesn't feel like he belongs. Unable to find a reason to express himself in dance or music like his parents, he decides to run away to Adelie Land and encounters 'The Mighty Sven'... a Penguin who can fly!!

To watch this video, you need the latest Flash-Player and active javascript in your browser.

When the world they live in is shaken by powerful forces, we see creatures of all sizes from tiny Krill (played by Brad Pitt and Matt Damon) to Elephant Seal's led by a beach master called Bryan, work together to try to save the Emperor Penguins who have been left stranded, including Erik's Mummy Gloria.

Both Ben and Elizabeth were fascinated by the cute animation and absolutely loved all of the songs, Elizabeth was dancing on my knee for most of it!) I have to say a tear came to my eye at Pink's 'Bridge of Light', an original song written for the Movie which is truly moving.

We all really enjoyed this cute family movie, it was a great way to spend a Saturday evening! Although my children are perhaps a little young to fully understand the themes in the movie, the vivid images of singing and dancing Penguins encourages their imagination and the moving story promotes valuable messages of self belief and teamwork.

The discs were packed with an abundence of special features, from sing along versions of the songs with a bouncing Erik to an interview with Alecia Moore (Pink) which Myself and Daddy watched when the little ones had gone to bed!

I was really impressed with Happy Feet Two and am now Itching to watch Happy Feet again! I can see that they will both be firm family favourites!

How to get your children to eat their greens... make a song and dance about it!!

Getting Children to eat their '5 a day' is no easy task, but it is one that's on most mothers minds at mealtimes! I am quite lucky that both my son Benjamin, who is four and my daughter Elizabeth, who has just turned one really enjoy eating a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, but I do know that's it's not so easy for everyone! I have friends that go to great lengths to 'hide' vegetables in their children's meals! But why should we be trying to trick our children into eating healthily? Surely we want them to grow up choosing to eat well?

Recent research commissioned by organic baby food manufacturers Ella's Kitchen, reveals that toddlers who use all their senses to 'play' with vegetables outside of mealtimes are more likely to eat them than those who don't. The study found that toddlers who experienced new vegetables through sight, smell. sound and touch before actually tasting were much more willing to eat them! This rings true in my experience, as being a vegetarian, I cook with a wide variety of vegetables and we have organic veg boxes delivered on a regular basis, as well as growing some in the garden, which Benjamin loves helping with! I do like to think that this has contributed towards his healthy eating habits!

The research mentioned above recommends using all the senses to introduce fruit and vegetables to your children. Some great ideas for this are getting out in the garden and growing a small vegetable patch together, cooking and preparing food together, playing with 'toy' fruit and vegetables (there are some adorable wooden sets available these days) and telling stories and singing about different types of fruit and veg!

To give Mummies a helping hand the lovely folks at Ella's Kitchen have teamed up with Celeb Mum Rachel Stevens to record 5 'tasty tunes' set to the melody of popular nursery rhymes! These include In the fruit bowl, on the tree, Yummy, yummy, yum! Eat to make you Feel good, Veggie Hokey Cokey and Fruit and veg are great to eat! Each song has been specially written to get tiny taste buds excited about munching and crunching on healthy fruit and veg and all five of these are free to Download from Ellaskitchen.co.uk!

We have been listening to these this week and think they're great! Ben has now learnt most of the words and sings along while Elizabeth has started bopping away when they come on, which is so cute! Our personal favourite is the 'Veggie Hokey Cokey' which is rather catchy (I caught myself singing it to myself on the bus the other day!) Ben has been teaching Elizabeth the actions too!

I think this is a lovely idea, and will will continue to listen and bop away to them! Hopefully they will help Elizabeth develop the same healthy attitude to fruit and veg that Benjamin has.

Don't forget that if you're not already signed up as a 'friend' of Ella's Kitchen by signing up here not only are you able to download these fab songs but you can also get a free weaning guide, a voucher for 50p off New Nibbly Fingers, plus the chance to get a fab free TerraCycle lunchbag!

So why not have a listen and and a dance with your little ones to Yummy, Yummy, Yum! or the Veggie Hokey Cokey and let me know what you think?

The Bopps!

The Bopps are back with a second series on Nick Jr! The Bopps duo are Stan Cullimore (founding member of 80s British pop group The Housemartins)and Keith Littler (producer of hit UK kids shows such as Merlin and Little Red Tractor). Each episode begins with a slapstick comedy sketch usually featuring Stan Bopp playing a trick on poor Keith Bopp. Expect squirrel costumes, invisible bikes and even a magic remote control that changes people’s clothes! The Bopps then go on to perform one of their catchy songs, which will bring out a love for music in pre-schoolers.... Hungry Squirrel, Dizzy the Dragon and The Holiday Song are among the favourites!

I was given the fantasic opportunity to ask Stan Bopp and Keith Bopp some questions, Here's what they had to say....

What Inspired you to start the Bopps?

(SB) Well, while Keith Bopp (KB) isn’t here – I’ll tell you the truth... It was all my idea – don’t listen to any strange, bizarre and probably untrue things that KB will say. It was ALL MY  IDEA... ahh. Oh no, he’s coming back . Sssh. Don’t tell him I said that.

(KB) It was all Stan Bopp’s idea….it says on this cheap hand written poster. The true answer is that we chatted for a couple of years about working together and then we finally decided to make an online series about music…which  Stan Bopp then  accidentally sold to Nickelodoen over a lunch (not sure any food was involved if you get my drift)

I love the songs you do in the show, I think music and songs really help children with learning, did you sing to your children to encourage learning?

(SB) Yes all the time. And now I sing to my grandkids. I totally agree that it helps them learn. My 20 month old granddaughter loves “heads, shoulders, knees and toes” and dancing along to our songs when we come on the telly.

(KB) When my son was very young I wrote songs for all of the banal things we did…cleaning teeth, bedtime, getting dressed (that’s where the Vest and Pants song came from). Now he’s seven…just tonight when I told him it was time for bed he sang back, “I’m not sleepy, I’m not sleepy!”

Both my little ones and I love the bright stripy outfits you wear as the Bopps. My son’s favourite colour is Red so he loves Keith Bopp! Did you argue over who got to be red and who got to be blue?

(SB) No – we never argue (do we KB? Oh hang on. I think he’s still sulking because of my first answer above.. I was only joking KB) Anyhow, I’m glad your son loves the red outfit. I think most of our audience seem to prefer KB to me. I even saw a petition in the office the other day – asking me to stop picking on KB and to leave the show...  I was very upset for a bit, but then I realised that it was all done in KB’s handwriting .. so I calmed down a bit.

(KB) We have a superb team at Nickelodeon who do all the real work…a lovely lady called Johanna designed the colour palette based on our original ideas (series 1)…only her ideas were better and her crayons were sharper than ours. Can’t remember why Stan got blue except he barged in front of me during the fitting screaming “I have to be blue! Blue is soooo me”

Do you have children of your own and do they watch the show? What do they think?

(SB) I am lucky enough to have four kids (2 girls, 2 boys – which seems fair) They’re all grown up now – and my daughters have presented my wife and I with four fantastic grandkids ( 3 girls, 1 boy – which still seems pretty fair). My grandkids love watching the show but they do get a bit confused about whether I’m Granddad or Stan Bopp.

(KB) Stan Bopp’s family account for 98% of our ratings. My son loves The Bopps and has appeared a couple of  times (he is dancing with the children during the song element and has red hair). Plus I ran many songs by him when we were composing them

They say never work with children or animals, Have you had any unplanned funny moments while filming?

(SB) They probably should have said; never work with children, animals or KB. He’s always telling me to go outside just before the cameras start rolling. (I don’t know why). The kids are great fun when we’re filming cos they have no idea about acting up for the camera. They’re totally natural. So if they get bored they’ll yawn. And if they have a question they’ll start talking to you in the middle of a shot. It really is a lot of fun working with them – cos you never get bored.

(KB) I’m already making series 3 and Stan Bopp doesn’t know. Ha!  In one of the music clips we had 30 children and Milo the dog…that was a long morning! During shooting a little girl smiled at me. I asked, “Are you enjoying yourself?” She nodded and then added, “But I prefer The Wiggles.”

What was your favourite sketch of The Bopps to make?

(SB) For me it was the squirrel ones. I love that squirrel suit.

(KB) I really enjoyed the Ladder sketch, there were dance moves, stunt falls and general silliness. Great fun. I have to say they were all fun to do…it’s not just Luvvy nonsense – our crew is genuinely superb and we really enjoy ourselves which, I think, you can see on screen.

How different is it touring with the live show to filming it for Nick Jr, and which do you prefer?

(SB) I think they’re both equally excellent, tiring and great fun.

(KB) Telly is fun and I’ve done for over 20 years. But I prefer live…meeting the families, chatting and hanging out is the best bit. As parents ourselves we find there is a real “gang” atmosphere and we all tend to get on really well. Lastly, you can’t beat the interaction of a live show…that’s an addiction all of its own. The studio is usually warm and dry though!

Do you have any plans to release a DVD of the Bopps or a second CD of more  catchy songs from the show?

(SB) KB says we’re not allowed to release any more CD’s or even a DVD until I sign a bit of paper admitting that he is cleverer than me, better looking than me and taller than me. I don’t know why. Why is that KB?

(KB) Ahhh I was really hoping you’d just sign it and not read it. We’re working on album 2 now so hopefully you’ll see it shortly…it just takes time deleting all of Stan Bopp’s bits J

Well I don't know about you but I can't wait to hear the second Album, I wonder if it will be as catchy as the first?!

The Bopps album from the first series went to number one on the Amazon Children’s Chart and you can buy it for just £7.69, an ideal stocking filler for a music loving pre-schooler!
