Celebrate World Breastfeeding week and #win!

As you may know the 1st to the 8th of August this year is World breastfeeding Week 2013. Although my breastfeeding journey with my daughter ended last year after 23 happy months when my little lady self weaned, it is still something I feel strongly about about promoting. The way a mother feeds her baby is a personal choice and would never reassure someone into breastfeeding if that was not what they wanted to do. However I feel it is important that all mothers are making an informed choice and information and support is available to them if needed. WBW is all about making that information and support available to mother's around the world.

I have written about my breastfeeding choices before and earlier this week I shared my experiences of breastfeeding and returning to work over on the Minene blog.

  1. My mum gave me a great tip for getting through those first couple of weeks when breastfeeding hurt: Drink very cold water through a straw as your baby is latching on. The cold water will help defer the pain. Other things that helped me include listening to relaxing music or watching a nice relaxing nature programme!

  2. My first great tip would be to buy some nipple covers just incase. My son couldn't latch and I wish I had some. By the time I found out about them it was too late.

  3. Just stay as relaxed as you can. You relax, baby relaxes and your milk flows more easily. Do whatever it is that relaxes you - lie down to feed, watch the TV, whatever works for you. And it does get easier. I promise!

  6. My best tip was to just build a nest and go with it, the early days pass in a blur but then it gets easier and is so lovely

  8. Be confident about feeding in public. People are almost always positive (or non plussed) and would rather see you feeding than listen to your poor hungry baby scream!

  10. I had a problem with my MIL saying it was gross, my son is now 11 months and I take great delight in breast feeding in front of her to prove it is normal, natural and the best thing for him. Unfortunately people are so used to breasts being sexual objects they are unable to see that they are really for nourishing infants.

  11. This tip is for twin mummies who are breastfeeding - make sure you get a good twin breastfeeding pillow, it makes the process a whole lot easier and tandem feeding far more comfortable.

  14. My son was born two and a half weeks ago, and i'm breastfeeding him. I actually love it, it doesn't hurt any longer (those first few days were very sore!) and I feed him on demand. My best tip is get it in your head you're going to breastfeed before the little one is even born. In my mind there was no other option but to breastfeed, and for me, it's worked!

  15. Make sure you take care of yourself - eat, drink and sleep where possible - to ensure a good milk supply.

  16. try and relax, get others to do jobs for you so you can spend time with baby latched to help build supply

  17. take all the advice you can from the midwives and nurses, before you get home and call them at the first sign you are having trouble, even if just to reassure you.

    the first 6 weeks are the worst. After that its a breeze

  21. Put cabbage leaves in your bra when they're feeling sore, if your boobs hurt less you are more likely to preserver
